It has been a messy and troublesome few weeks forSplitgate 2since its launch in early June, from its CEO’s controversial statements to underwhelming gameplay and beyond. And unsurprisingly, it appears things have finally caught up with 1047, the studio behind the Splitgate franchise.

In a post onXtoday, 1047 announced thatSplitgate 2will be headed back to Beta until at least 2026and conceded that it launched before it was ready. Further, the studio will be laying off team members and shutting down the originalSplitgateservers. The FPS will remain playable for the foreseeable future to anyone who has purchased it, and 1047 will also be delivering the promised Chapter 3. Otherwise, it’s back to the drawing board forSplitgate 2.

1047 Will Have To Try Again To Make This FPS Great

From its very inception,Splitgate 2has been steeped in controversy, with its CEO, Ian Proulx, making the confounding decision to wear a red"Make FPS Great Again" hatat Summer Game Fest. The move was just the beginning of the game’s problems, however, withplayers being largely underwhelmedby its lackluster gameplayand plagued by performance issues and bugs.

It’s been a tough couple of months forSplitgate 2, and it’s hard to say if the game will ever fully recover.

1047’s announcement provided some basic explanations of the steps ahead, couching the lay-offs in an explanation of getting “the time to build the Splitgate you deserve.“While theoriginalSplitgateserversare going to be taken offline, developers are"exploring the possibility of supporting offline or peer-to-peer matches.“Overall, it’s been a tough couple of months forSplitgate 2,and it’s hard to say if the game will ever fully recover.

Splitgate 2 Made A Lot Of Mistakes

Reverting To Beta Might Be The Best Move For Splitgate 2

It’s hard to summarize everything that went wrong with Splitgate 2’s launch, but the consensus seems to be that it simply does not hold up to the original by any stretch of the imagination. The originalSplitgatehadHalo-style gameplay that hooked a lot of players, at least early on, butSplitgate 2lost that same sense of FPS excitement pretty quickly. Notably, the matchmaking and battle royale modes left a lot to be desired, andimplementation of its defining portal mechanic proved underwhelming.

A substantial portion of players and critics alike agree thatSplitgate 2is lacking in all the most important areas, so today’s move focused on “rebuilding the core experience” comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with the game’s flaws. It’s hard to say if reverting to Beta will prove fruitful and ifSplitgate 2will re-emerge as a great FPS, or if this is simply the death knell of a game that was always destined for failure.
