Mewtwo Strikes Back Remains One of Pokémon’s Best Movies
The Film Creates an Excellent Villain in Mewtwo
Mewtwo owes a lot of its popularity to the movie, as he was provided with a sympathetic characterization, and the film unveils a lot of Mewtwo’s past and backstory, which is only alluded to in thePokémon RedandBluegames.Mewtwo gets to show off its phenomenal power in a showdown with Mew, as the other clones and Pokémon battle it out.
The film is also famous for its climactic scene, in which Ash charges forward to put a stop to the fighting, and is turned to stone by Mew and Mewtwo’s fighting. This leads to Pikachu crying as he desperately tries to revive Ash with thundershocks in what was one of the most devastating scenes for children in the 1990s.
Mewtwo Strikes Backalso deals with some heavy topics, such as cloning and the meaning of existence, which might surprise fans who haven’t seen the movie in a long time. While the English version of the film does have some cuts which damage the story, it’s still surprisingly poignant, with Mewtwo departing with its iconic words:
“I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.”
