DC is introducing four new types of Kryptonite to theSupermanmythos, each with a different effect on the hero’s Kryptonian physiology. While poisonous green kryptonite is the most famous of Superman’s weaknesses, he can also be driven into a berserker rage (red kryptonite), mind-controlled (purple kryptonite) and cured of any virus (white kryptonite.) Now, that list is getting significantly longer.

A Black Label series,Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1takes place in its own reality and appears to be a love letter to Silver Age comics, where Superman lore was far more malleable. In this era,Red Kryptonite essentially produced a random effectevery time Superman was exposed to it, from turning him into a half-ant/half-Kryptonian to growing dragon wings.
Now,Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1is introducing four new types of Kryptonite which will have similarly outlandish effects. While these shades of Kryptonite won’t automatically be included in mainstream canon, it’s likely that any which catch the imagination of writers and artists will, especially since introducing new Kryptonite colors is so low effort (they essentially just fall to Earth randomly as a side-effect of Krypton’s destruction.)
What’s particularly fun about this series is that the Kryptonites' effects will take place in front of iconic heroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman and Shazam, with Lex Luthor attempting to turn these new minerals to his advantage. It’s clear this won’t be a static story whereSuperman experiences each new Kryptonitein a vaccuum, but one where his friends and villains will be fighting to keep him under control/exploit his weaknesses.
Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1is set to put the Man of Steel through some intense body horror shenanigans, as new additions like Cobalt Kryptonite result in unique changes we’ve never seen before.
Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1is coming August 13 from DC Comics.
