And while this new revelation makes them even more heroic than fans knew, it also makes their death even more heartbreaking, particularly becausethey could have avoided it if they were even slightly less heroic.
In today’sStar Wars: Jedi Knights #5- from Marc Guggenheim, Madibek Musabekov, Luis Guerrero and Clayton Cowles -Star Warsfans witness a previously unseen mission carried out by Jedi Masters Yaddle and Jedi Knight Seera Longa. The events of this mission give new meaning toYaddle’s death at Count Dooku’s hands, originally shown inStar Wars: Tales of the Jedi.
The comic reveals thatYaddle previously saved Count Dooku’s lifeduring the early days of his corruption, making it possible for him to kill her later in life. In fact, it’s even hinted that Yaddle senses Dooku would kill her, but was unwilling to go against the will of the Force by avoiding her fate.
Yaddle Saved Count Dooku, Ensuring Her Own Death
Did Yaddle Know She Was Sealing Her Own Fate?
In the issue, Yaddle and Seera oversee discussions between the Trade Federation and the Gillanter Corporation, with Dooku working behind the scenes to maintain Palpatine’s control over the former. After Wookiee mercenaries attack, Dooku is captured and tortured for information. Seera Longa questions whether the Jedi should get involved, since doing so may endanger their place as mediators. Yaddle replies that she can sense the Force wants Dooku to live, declaring,“I cannot deny the Force. I would sooner die.”
Yaddle and Seera are successful in saving Dooku, who arrogantly states that he is working with a new force in the galaxy that"will mean the end of the Jedi Order.“Despite his dark promise, Yaddle insists that,“Preserving life is never regretful. Whatever the cost may prove to be.“From her attitude, it seems that Yaddle sensesDooku will do something terrible, and a flashforward to her murder when she’s considering how to rescue Dooku suggestsshe may well sense she’s involved.
Yaddle’s Death Saved the Galaxy… But That Doesn’t Make It Sting Less
Yaddle Trusted the Force Enough to Die for It
Dooku later kills Yaddle after she discovers his links to Darth Sidious, with the murder of a Jedi fully converting him to the Dark Side andearning the ‘Darth Tyranus’ title. Ultimately, Dooku’s actions are part of a chain of events that led to Palpatine’s death and the final defeat of the Sith by the Skywalker family, meaning that Yaddle’s actionsdidserve the Light Side and the will of the Force.
However, deciding to save her own murderer makes her death even more tragic, as it would have been so easy for her to avoid her fate. Ultimately, however, Yaddle was a Jedi master through and through, and was willing to sacrifice herself if it meant serving the will of the Force and making theStar Warsgalaxy a better place in the long run.
