Diego Luna as Cassian Andor walking with purpose in Andor season 2

I think I really have given a lot and I think it’s time for me to go do something else. I’m trying to get [a] movie off. I mean, I’ll never say never, but I mean I really, it’s been five and a half, six years. And then if you throw in Rogue, it goes into 10. I mean, I’ve tried to leave things in better shape than I’ve took in my five years and I’ve left them in better shape than I found them. And I feel good about that. And right now I’d like to leave it like that.

What This Means For Tony Gilroy

Andor Season 2 Could Be His Final Star Wars Project

It makes sense that Tony Gilroy might be tempted to return toStar Warsafter the series' success.Andorseason 1was particularly well-regarded,earning a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%with a solid 87% audience score and going on to be nominated for eight Primetime Emmys and one Golden Globe. However, in addition to potentially wanting to quit while he is ahead, during his time in the franchise, Gilroy has primarily ushered Andor to the screen, and given his death at the end ofRogue One, there is little else left to explore in his life.

In 2023, Diego Luna was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance inAndor, but he lost to Kevin Costner forYellowstone.

Our Take On Tony Gilroy’s Star Wars Comments

This May Be The Right Time To Leave

It ultimately makes sense for Gilroy to depart the franchise after the end ofAndor. The future of theStar Warsfranchise is already secure, with many upcoming projects in development, including movies directed by Taika Waititi and James Mangold.Leaving the franchise on a high note could also allow Gilroy to get his aforementioned film project off the ground, springboarding off the success of the Disney+ series. While he did not name a specific project, he may be referring toBehemoth!, an Oscar Isaac-led drama about a cellist that he is set to write and direct.

Andorseason 2 premieres on Disney+ with three episodes on April 22, which will be followed by three-episode drops on Tuesdays through May 13.
