During its recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event, Apple confirmed it will be segueing away from Intel processors in favor of its own designed ARM processors.
Demonstrating the speed and efficiency of Apple silicon, the company showed off a Mac computer running off the same A12Z Bionic chip that is utilized in the latest 2020 iPad Pro as it operated an early version ofnewly announced macOS, Big Sur.

Apple then gave a demonstration of how its silicon handles heavy-duty applications such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The system was able to auto-tone an image with lightning speed in Lightroom, whereas the Photoshop demo showcased how easily their processor could render a file with hundreds of different layers of seagulls. Turning its attention to video editing software, Apple also showed how its new silicon-Macs could easily handle high-resolution footage in its Final Cut Pro software.
Not only does Apple’s silicon boast powerful processing power, but it also comes with advanced GPU capabilities. To highlight the technical ability of their new chips, Apple played an emulated demonstration of an Apple silicon ready Mac runningTomb Raiderat Full HD (1080p).
This decision to switch to their own proprietary silicon brings Mac computers in line with the rest of their product range of iPhones and iPads, which also use Apple-designed chips and are in line for somebig changes once iOS14 becomes available. The alignment of architecture should allow developers to easily create software and apps that will be accessible across Apple’s entire range of hardware.
Apple has confirmed it has already made popular apps such as Messages and Photos compatible with the new architecture; it has also prepared Rosetta 2, which will help users transition any third-party software. The tech company has stated that the first systems that will feature this new silicon will arrive by the end of 2020. It intends to transition all Macs to their own silicon over the next two years.
