As theBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot approaches, one actor has thrown their hat into the ring in a heartfelt post. The original series ran from 1997-2003 and followed Buffy Summers as the Chosen One. TheupcomingBuffy the Vampire Slayerrebootis set to film a pilot for Hulu with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role.
As the series progressed, it built out an ensemble of characters that made the world feel lived-in and authentic. This spanned from Buffy’s direct friend group, or the Scoobies, and eventually other supporting characters. Now, one fan-favorite wants to reprise their role.
In an Instagram post by actorJames Leary, heshares in a heartfelt post that he wants to return as Clem, the loose-skinned demon. Leary shares his gratitude for being a guest star who grew into a beloved character who appeared in eight episodes over seasons 6 and 7.
Leary looks at the larger television landscape and other shows returning and believes Clem should make another appearance. He thanks the fans for their support over the last two decades, but shares his hope that Clem will return. Check out his post below:
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my time on Buffy. It’s been over 20 years since I first showed up as “loose-skinned demon” #whatever. Just a weird little guy playing poker for kittens.
I was never meant to stick around. I was an “under five.” But somehow, Clem resonated. Maybe because he was kind. Maybe because he was funny. Maybe because he wasn’t trying to be cool — and in a show full of slayers, vampires, and ancient evils, that weird softness mattered to people.
Over two seasons and eight episodes, I got to live out every fan’s dream — I was in the thing I loved. I’ve met fans all over the world who still remember Clem, who tell me he made them feel safe, or seen, or just gave them a laugh when they really needed it. That means more to me than I can explain.
I never became a series regular. Never got the big guest-star roles. Never made more than $1500 a week. And yeah… that stings sometimes.
I see reboots happening. Old castmates coming back. Bigger names getting their calls.
Do I think they’ll call me?
Do I think they should?
Yeah. I do.
But whether they do or not, I’m proud of what I did.
I took a side character and turned him into something real. Something people still care about.
And that’s enough.
Thanks for loving Clem. And for remembering him.
You all made that little piece of TV magic worth it.
Any Character Could Come Back
Clem quickly became a fan-favorite. First appearing in season 6, episode 5, “Life Serial,” Clem is introduced playing poker for kittens with Spike. A drunk Buffy is appalled by the currency and lets all the felines go. From there,Clem became the character Spike would interact with the most outside of the traditional Scooby Gang.
While Buffy’s story canonically continued after the series finale with comic books and an audio drama, these will more than likely be ignored with the new reboot.Clem was heavily featured in expanded material, including being hopelessly in love with Harmony and becoming her obedient assistant, and in the recent audio drama,Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, where he is still friends with Spike.
As Leary recently reprised his role, and the character continues to be used, it would not be shocking to see him return.Clem’s good-hearted nature helps him stand out against the darker and more dramatic parts of the show, and he would be a welcome addition. WithGellar wanting to bring back oldBuffycharacters, Clem could be among that group.
Our Take On Clem Possibly Returning
Bring Him Back
In the series, Clem was last seen leaving Sunnydale alongside most of the other residents out of fear that The First Evil would defeat Buffy. As the character presumably survived, there’s no reason not to bring him back. Clem could help bridge the continuity between the original show and theBuffy the Vampire Slayerrevival.
