Summary

Update 2.0 forCyberpunk 2077appears to have removed an NPC that fans thought was a cameo from Elon Musk. While no patch notes acknowledged that the Elon Musk lookalike had been removed,Cyberpunk 2077players were quick to notice the change. That’s likely in part due to recent revelations that Musk actively sought a cameo inCyberpunk 2077. That controversy may have directly led to the Musk lookalike’s removal.

Rumors of Musk appearing inCyberpunk 2077go back to 2019. After announcing the Cybertruck, the officialCyberpunk 2077Twitter account replied to Musk saying, “We had a deal, Elon.” The Tesla owner responded with an ambiguous, “See you in 2077.” OnceCyberpunk 2077launched in 2020, players looked for the Musk cameo and believed they found it in the game’s corpo origin opening sequence. ACyberpunk 2077background NPC looked mysteriously like Musk. It should be clarified that CD Projekt Red has since confirmed it’s just a coincidence and that there is no Musk cameo.

Since CD Projekt Red has not officially confirmed that it replaced the NPC, it’s unclear why it would do so. There’s always a possibility that it was an accident or coincidence. The situation will undoubtedly be a topic of speculation within the Cyberpunk 2077 fandom going forward.

If CD Projekt Red removed the Musk-like character deliberately, it’s possible, but unconfirmed, that it has to do with a recently reported controversial incident. Musk’s ex-wifeGrimes voices a character inCyberpunk 2077named Lizzy Wizzy. Musk allegedly showed up at one of her recording sessions with a two-hundred-year-old gun and jokingly said, “I’m armed but not dangerous,” while asking for a cameo. Musk says CD Projekt Red “relented.”

Cyberpunk 2077is a massive open-world gamefilled with an incredibly diverse collection of NPCs. It’s also received substantial overhauls of key systems multiple times since it launched. A Musk lookalike appearing and disappearing is oddly fitting for Night City, and understandable from both an in-universe and meta point of view.

Cyberpunk 2077is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
