Darth Maulactor Sam Witwer has just revealed some exciting new details about the former Sith Lord’s upcomingStar Warsshow. During Star Wars Celebration 2025, Lucasfilm Animation announced the upcoming release ofMaul: Shadow Lord. Now, Sam Witwer has more recently confirmed some exciting elements fans can expect from the new show.
Beyond theexclusive footage released at Celebration forMaul: Shadow Lord, Witwer revealed some exciting bits of information at the major Japan event. However, he more recently joined fellowStar Warsactress Katee Sackhoff on an episode of her podcast,The Sackhoff Show, revealing some other key details about the new series. To that end, here’s everything Sam Witwer just revealed aboutMaul: Shadow Lord.
5It Wasn’t Maul’s Show Before, Now It Is
Past Ideas Will Finally Be Used
One of the most exciting bits of information from Witwer was his recollection that he often had ideas forMaul during the production ofClone WarsorRebelsthat he and/or Dave Filoni wanted to explore, only for Filoni to hold off as Maul wasn’t the focal point of those shows. Now, Witwer has confirmed the time has finally come to explore those past ideas:
“Every time he (Filoni) said ‘this isn’t Maul’s show’ it never occurred to me that Maulcouldhave a show. So I just took those ideas and I’m like ‘Well I guess we’ll never see that.’ and now he’s like “It’s Maul’s show' so now I’m invited to go to people and go ‘what about this?’ and they go ‘Great. You’re right. We should explore that.'”
Now that Maulisgetting his ownStar Warsshow, it’s going to be very exciting to see what ideas are incorporated and how Maul’s character is fleshed out.
Maul Won’t Become A Good Guy
It’s been confirmed thatMaul: Shadow Lordwill explore the former Sith Lord’s humanity likeStar Warsnever has before. That said, Witwer has also confirmed that that doesn’t mean Maul won’t all of a sudden become a good guy:
“It’s a show about bad guys versus worse guys…our bad guys are still bad guys. This isn’t going to be a show where you find out Maul is a real teddy bear, man. ‘Oh, he’s just misunderstood!’…We’re not doing that.”
He’s Not According To The Sith
Interestingly, Sam Witwer has also revealed that the show will explore whetherMaul is truly as bad as Darth Sidious or Darth Vader.Confirming that the answer is no, Witwer specifies that in the eyes of the Sith Lord and the way they operate, Maul isnoton their level (at least not anymore):
“The idea is that, even though he’s a bad guy, the fun of it is: is he as bad as Sidious or Vader? And the answer is, actually no.”
This is likely due to Maul’s own failings and ambitions, as well as his personal experiences since his fall at the end ofThe Phantom Menace.
2Maul Will Question His Master’s Empire
It Won’t Match What Maul Envisioned
One of the most intriguing pieces of information is the reveal thatMaul will apparently be re-evaluating the Empire his former master has built. After all, Maul was one of the fewStar Warscharacters who knew of Sidious’ plans ahead of time:
“Is that what [Sidious] had in mind?… Maul comes from a time of swords and sorcery and magic and knights, and now all of that color of the universe is being sucked out of this mechanized Empire. And Maul’s like, ‘Is this right? Is this the universe we’re trying to build?’”
It seems as though Maul will be actively questioning the new world order, as well as his own place within it. Presumably, this will lead to the official creation ofCrimson Dawn, inspired by Maul’s Shadow Collective formed during the Clone Wars.
1How Does Maul Handle A Galaxy With No Jedi?
“Joker Without Batman”
One of the last things Witwer revealed aboutMaul: Shadow Lordis that the show will feature Maul grappling with the galaxy’s new status quo, one that’s largely devoid of Jedi. Having devoted his life to killing Jedi whom he hated so much when he was still Sidious' apprentice, Witwer describes Maul in this new show as “The Joker without Batman”. As such, it’s going to be interesting to see how Maul adjusts and adapts whenShadow Lordreleases next year.
