Dead Space’s world-building is some of the most effective in gaming because of how subtle and nuanced it can be. Especially in the originalDead Space, almost all lore is conveyed through environmental storytelling, if not audio and video logs.Learning what happened aboard the USG Ishimurais fascinating, but it is not necessary for the player’s enjoyment of the present action. In EA Motive’s remake, the Ishimura is stunningly realized and upscaled from how fans may remember it, and because Isaac can talk he is able to contribute to conversations about what has occurred.

These all have some sort of footing in lore depending on which locations they are found in, but Peng is much more unique. Peng is seemingly not in reference to anything, and runs ads that are all too generic to depict as any singular commercial product. Peng does have a substantial inclusion in the game as a rare treasure players can find in the form of a small statue.

This statue is modeled after a feminine figure and can be sold at a store for predetermined amounts of credits in eachDead Spacegame, withtheDead Spaceremake’s Peng treasureselling for 30,000 credits. It’s found in the late-game section where the Red Marker is moved around a room to get it down to the hangar bay’s loading dock.

This is still a fun way to create science fiction world-building with generic slogans that could be marketing literally anything intheDead Spaceuniverse, and it is great to see it honored throughout each game thus far. Some players may go throughDead Spaceand not pay attention to a single flier or notice on the wall, but each environmental asset tells its own story and adds to the lore players can piece together about every location they explore.

Dead Spaceis available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
