Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 7.Michael C. Hall got a chance to do something inDexter: Resurrectionepisode 7 that he hasn’t been able to do properly since 2013.Dexter: Resurrectionhas already brought back most of theDexterfranchise’s most endearing features. From James Remar’s Harry Morgan to Dexter freely killing again without the guilt he had inNew Blood,Resurrectionfeels like the oldDexteragain.

For its first six episodes, however,Resurrectionwas still missing an important part of Dexter Morgan. Michael C. Hall has been electrifying in his most iconic role, and the rest of thecast ofResurrectionhas been almost as good. It wasn’t until the latest episode ofResurrectionthat Hall finally got to bring back one of Dexter’s best quirks after over a decade, and it was well worth the wait.

Dexter Doing Blood Spatter Analysis In Resurrection Episode 6 Was Electrifying

InDexter: Resurrectionepisode 7, Dexter finally got a chance to use his blood spatter analysis skills again. He’s not working for the NYPD, but Dexter did attend a lecture by Claudette Wallace where she showed crime scene photos from the New York Ripper investigation. Based on just the photos (and the trophy in Leon Prater’s museum), Dexter was able to determine exactly what weapon the Ripper used.

Even though Dexter did have an unfair advantage,Resurrectionepisode 7 was the first time Michael C. Hall has done a proper blood spatter analysis demonstrationsince theending of the originalDexter. He did analyze Harrison’s attack on Ethan inNew Blood, but that was an odd scene where Deb acted as a body double and no living person was there to witness it.

Resurrection’s return to proper blood spatter analysis also didn’t disappoint. Michael C. Hall was as incredible inResurrectionas he was 12 years ago. Dexter, with his wild eyes and exaggerated body movements as he envisions a murder coupled with his complete competence with crime scene forensics, was a delight to watch. It’s very satisfying to watch the master at work again after over a decade.

Michael C. Hall is also so great at toeing the line between unnerving and delightful. He’s so good at making Dexter seem just a bit too passionate about forensics without actually raising suspicions. Claudette’s startled reaction said it all:Dexter brings an undeniable energy to analyzing blood spatter thatNew Bloodwas simply missing.Resurrectionis all the better for bringing it back.

Dexter Is Still Working On His Blood Spatter Skills In Original Sin

WhileResurrectionepisode 7 was the first time Michael C. Hall has done a proper blood spatter analysis sinceDexterseason 8, it’s not the first time Dexter has done one since then.Patrick Gibson’s Dexter inDexter: Original Sinhas also been doing proper blood spatter analyses.Gibson’s version of Dexter, however, also has some differences from the originalDexter.

In the originalDexter, we met Dexter when he was a veteran of Miami Metro who had been investigating crime scenes for over a decade. He was already a pro, and his analysis skills were already incredibly fine-tuned. Dexter inOriginal Sin, however, is right at the start of his career. He makes mistakes, like forgetting that a victim was shot point-blank in the head, and he’s still trying to find his footing as an analyst.

Gibson’s version of Dexter also, by necessity, doesn’t have the same gravitas Hall’s version does. He’s still a kid and the newest analyst at Miami Metro, so he can’t command a crime scene like adult Dexter does. He’s also less confident in his ability to blend in during social interactions, soGibson masterfully layers in a bit of restraint as Dexter tries not to expose himself as beingtoointerested in his work.

Original Sin’s blood spatter analysis scenes are great in their own right, and so is Gibson, but Hall is just on another level. He can take something as foreign as forensic science and make it electrifying for audiences who know nothing about it. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: watching Michael C. Hall investigate crime scenes inDexter: Resurrectionis a treat.
