Disney’s recentLilo & Stitchremake is a huge hit for the studio, but it is now clear thatthe film will fail to set one surprising 2025 box office record by the end of its run. Earning more than$1 billion and solidifying Disney’s remake future, the movie has already become the biggest Hollywood hit of 2025 globally.
2025 has been an interesting year at the box office. While films likeF1: The Moviehave found surprising success, some of what seemed to be guaranteed hits, like theMarvel projectsThe Fantastic Four: First StepsandThunderbolts*, have underperformed.Snow Whitewas a disaster for Disney, yetLilo & Stitchwas able to break through tremendously.
The state of the box office is changing, andnothing attests to this further than the highest-grossing movie of 2025,theChinese smash hitNe Zha II. Considering this, however, what is most surprising is the performance ofLilo & Stitchdomestically, culminating in this surprising statistic.
Lilo & Stitch Won’t Beat Minecraft To Be 2025’s Highest Grosser Domestically (So Far)
Lilo & Stitchmight be the biggest Hollywood hit globally, butit will not be able to overtake the biggest domestic hit,A Minecraft Movie, by the end of its run.Minecraftis now one of Warner Bros. biggest moviesof all time, earning $423 million domestically, with a worldwide total of more than $953 million.
This has been a huge year for Warner Bros.,who currently have three of the five highest domestic grosses of 2025.A Minecraft Movie‘s enormous success was shocking, but the incredible performance ofSinners, an original film by Ryan Coogler, is equally surprising. Rounded out bySuperman’s excellent domestic run, this is a big year for the studio at home.

Lilo & Stitchis just about to move to streaming on Disney+ on September 3rd, and is already available for purchase digitally. While the film’s legs have been excellent,it is currently making less than $250,000 a week and dropping quickly. The movie is currently in only 65 theaters, and sits at $421,743,355 domestically perBox Office Mojo.
While the film is just over $2 million away from overtakingMinecraftdomestically,it does not appear that this will happen during this initial release. Still, the box office forLilo & Stitchis a truly impressive feat for the dominant studio, especially in the wake of several of their other films underperforming this year.
Disney could still take the overall top domestic spot later this year. They haveZootopia 2, Tron: Ares, and more, including subsidiary 20th Century Studios’Avatar: Fire and Ashstill to come. As it stands, however,Lilo & Stitchwill have to settle for being the biggest Hollywood hit of 2025 overall, just not at home.
