Doctor Odysseyrefused to fully commit to its most popular storyline, but it ironically may have saved the medical drama. Despite garnering an impressive following in its pilot season,Doctor Odyssey’s complicated cancelationleaves season 2 as an unlikely but not impossible prospect. Nevertheless, ABC has been vocal about its willingness to return toDoctor Odyssey’s luxury cruise ship.
It’s no secret that the freshman medical procedural made a name for itself due in no small part to the outrageous plots, risqué relationship drama, andridiculous theme weeks inDoctor Odyssey. The Ryan Murphy series wasn’t merely a show— it was a spectacle. Unfortunately, the drama’s most highly-anticipated storyline would have ruinedDoctor Odyssey.
Doctor Odyssey’s Throuple Never Would Have Worked
The Trio Was Incompatible To The Point Of Toxicity
Doctor Odyssey’s convoluted love plotbetween Max (Joshua Jackson), Tristan (Sean Teale), and Avery (Phillipa Soo) took up an egregious amount of screen time throughout the first season. Sadly,Doctor Odyssey’s love triangle was doomed from the start. The actors all gave phenomenal performances, but I never believed any of the love confessions (of which there were far, far too many).
Max and Tristan barely tolerated each other as people, let alone romantic partners…
Even if the characters had palpable, realistic chemistry, they could never have pursued a serious relationship. Many viewers, and even Avery herself, campaigned for her, Max, and Tristan to be in a throuple rather than a simple love triangle. One of the many glaring issues, however, is that Max and Tristan barely tolerated each other as people, let alone romantic partners.
In fact,Doctor Odysseywasted Tristan’s characterby keeping him bogged down in a futile tug-of-war for Avery’s affection. When Avery chased Max, he sulked. When Avery settled for him, he lamented her surface-level interest. On paper, Avery, Max, and Tristan dating seemed like a perfect solution. In reality, however, it would have led to even worse heartbreak for everyone involved.
Doctor Odyssey Should Have Let Max, Tristan, and Avery Be Single
The“Ody3” throuple wasn’t meant to be, but Max and Avery’s finale storyline wasn’t any better. If ABC truly wanted to give the medical trio a happyending inDoctor Odyssey, nobody in the love triangle should have ended up together. After the drama, false pregnancy, and whiplash-inducing back-and-forth,Avery, Max, and Tristan all needed alone time to self-reflect.
All episodes ofDoctor Odysseyare streaming on Hulu.
Furthermore, giving up on their intricate romantic entanglements would have made theOdyssey’s medical crew a more successful team. Plus, ifDoctor Odysseyhad been renewed, the three characters would have had the freedom to explore other, less complicated relationships. We may never know how long Avery and Max last, but at leastDoctor Odysseyavoided its trainwreck throuple route.
