Clair Obscur: Expedition 33has seen less than a handful of updates since its launch, and while they have all included some necessary fixes, themost recent patch 1.4.0might be a bit underwhelming for most players. There are quite a few features that fans have been waiting for, and this patch delivers on one of these by adding a much-needed Battle Retry feature.
However, outside of this and some added compatibility and accessibility updates, Patch 1.4.0 actually includes a few surprising nerfs that players probably didn’t even realize were issues in the first place. Overall, this most recent patch has a handful of quality-of-life improvements, but if you were expecting any major overhauls or new features/mechanicssimilar to the previous patch, which introduced difficulty modifiers and let you rematch thehardest boss inClair Obscur, you’ll likely be disappointed.
Clair Obscur’s Patch 1.4.0 Is A Bit Underwhelming
Battle Retry Should Have Been Included At Launch
Clair Obscuris full of incredible features, but one that was sorely missing since launch was a Battle Retry function, which was officially added with Patch 1.4.0 this week. This feature allows players toimmediately restart the fight after losinginstead of having to journey through the map and track the enemy down again. While it’s a great addition, it’s one that many players who have already beaten the game likely won’t care too much about, considering how long it comes after the game’s initial launch.
Aside from this feature, Sandfall has added a new autoplay dialogue function that will speed things along for players in theirNew Game+ playthroughsthat don’t want to sit through conversations again, as well as some performance and graphical upgrades. However, the main features of this update that caught my eye had more to do with nerfing aspects of the gamethat I didn’t expect to be on Sandfall’s radar at all.
The Nerfs In Patch 1.4.0 Are Disappointing
Lune’s Thermal Transfer Skill Apparently Needed Fixing
While understandable to some extent, two major nerfs in Patch 1.4.0 are also kind of disappointing, especially considering most players probably didn’t even realize they were “problems” in the first place. In particular, Lune’sThermal Transferskill was apparently functioning improperly, giving players an extra turn every time, even if she didn’t consume the two Earth Stains as a requirement.
The second nerf deals with a glitch that was occasionally making players invincible when using Second Chance, Healing Boon, and Protecting Death. This was likely a result of the healing mechanics getting “overloaded” andmaking it impossible for players to actually take any damage. The invincibility effect here is very niche and difficult to trigger intentionally, and it seems like an unnecessary fix given how many other ways there are to “break” the game (by design).
“These fixes should not have been as high priority as other necessary tweaks.”
Clearly, the above two effects were not intentionally designed that way, despite the results being beneficial for players. Overall, while there are a handful of decent updates in this most recent patch, it seems like these fixes should not have been as high priority as other necessary tweaks and gameplay adjustments that players have been requesting sinceClair Obscur: Expedition 33first launched.
