The critically acclaimed PC game,Sable, which is often compared toBreath of the Wild, is going to be completely free to keep on theEpic Games Store, giving those who skipped out on it due to some of the initial controversy surrounding its performance the perfect opportunity to finally play it.Sableis a one-of-a-kind game that fans have dubbed “Breath of the WildmeetsJourney,” and is worth playing, especially for those looking for a cozy, heartfelt adventure about discovering oneself.
Sablelaunched to strong reviews when it first came out, now sitting comfortably with a 76 onMetacritic. There were some minor issues with its initial launch, especially on console. This largely boiled down to performance problems that were largely ironed out. Fortunately, Sable’s highlights more than make up for it, making it worth picking up while it is completely free between June 26 to July 3.
Why You Should Play Sable
It Is An Underrated Open-World Gem
Sableis easily one of thebest indie open-world games, as it puts a focus on exploration and narrative, much likeJourney, a game it is frequently compared to. There is absolutely no combat, monsters, or evil villains attempting to take over the world. Rather,it is a peaceful, exploration-focused experience with a narrative all about discovering oneself.Sablecan be beaten in an afternoon if you want, as the game ostensibly ends when you get your first of 15 possible masks.
However, if you want to really get to grips with its incredibly stylized world that’s teeming with secrets, interesting side quests and characters, and gorgeous vistas, then you can collect all 15 masks, which will take around 14 hours according toHow Long to Beat. While it doesn’t quite fit into thebest indie RPGcategory, as it doesn’t have any real RPG elements,it is often compared toBOTW, and rightfully so. Both are melancholic, exploration-heavy, open-world games with gorgeous and surreal environments, quirky characters, upgradable stamina, and memorable side content worth completing.
It currently has over 4,000Steamreviews, 87% of which are positive. User BobbyRunout described it as “Not only beautiful, but full of intriguing lore and fun to explore,” and user xlignieres gave it perhaps the highest praise by saying it is “Dune meets Nausicaä meets Moebius meets BOTW.” User chocob00k said it “might be one of [their] new favourite games,” much like several other fans, including myself.Sableis one of my all-time favorite games, if only because of the phenomenal Japanese Breakfast soundtrack and amazing art style, and everyone should give it a go, especially for free.
Epic Games Freebies Are A Great Way To Try Out Different Games
There’s Usually A Good Selection Of Titles
It is easy to feel like the Epic Games Store is a much worse version of Steam. However, at the very least, the many free games it hands out weekly are truly incredible, and a great way to discover a new favorite title. I discovered a lot of my favorite games, many of which happen to be some of2024’s best games, through the Epic Game Store freebies. It feels great not to pay anything for an amazing experience, especially when games are becoming increasingly more expensive.
Frankly, my entire Epic Games Store library is full of exclusively free games. It is a useful service and worth keeping your eye on for future titles. Epic also does events during the holiday period in which it gives out a free game every day, the majority of which are recent triple-A titles. Regardless, at the very least, make sure to pick upSableand give it a try, as it truly is an underrated gem waiting to be discovered.
