Baldur’s Gate 3features 12 base classes, each offering its own distinct mechanics, combat styles, and role-playing flavor with unique skill proficiencies to class-exclusive dialogue. Whichever classes your character has levels in play a great role in how you’re able to interact with the world around you.

Although you may have an extremely fulfilling campaign by sticking to any class, it’s evident that some provide a much richer experience than the rest. If you’re interested in the role-playing side ofBG3and are stuck on which class to pick in your next playthrough, here’s what you can expect from each option.

12Fighter

Not Much Room For Fancy Backstories

There are certainly a lot of ways to make fighter characters interesting, but it’s not news to anyone that the class is considered one of the most generic. As a result, Larian didn’t have an awful lot to work off of when it came to unique dialogue options.

Fighter dialogue often revolves around past battles or being muscle-for-hire,which isn’t anything too extraordinary for the realm ofDnD, and still won’t be fitting for every character. It does allow you to be intimidating withoutcommitting to a paladinoath or having the personality of a barbarian, but it isn’t a great choice if you’re looking for something with real flavor.

Even Lae’zel is on the lower end of unique character-based interactions, though she makes up for this by being a githyanki, the race with the largest number of dialogue tags.

11Wizard

It’s Hard To Upstage Gale

Wizards are fantastic mechanically, but fall off a bit when it comes to roleplay.

In conversation, wizards are heavily overshadowed by other spellcasters - typically those who are charisma-based.Similarly to fighters being the generic martial class, wizards are often the de facto magic users, which makes it hard to provide dialogue that’s fitting for a large range of custom characters.

The only exception to this is Gale, but if you want to make your own wizard, you may end up feeling like he takes the spotlight away from you. Gale is a prodigy, and has a history with the goddess of magic herself, so it’s very difficult to make a character that compares to him.

10Ranger

A Solid Choice Of Class

Rangers get very few unique interactions, thoughSpeak with Animalsis a massive bonus for unlocking more characters to talk to. Many ranger dialogue options can only be accessed with this spell, or generally revolve around animals and nature.

Since you’re able to’t get Minsc in your party until Act Three, ranger is a decent class to choose for a protagonist,as you won’t have to worry about one of your companions stealing the show.

9Monk

More Of An Acquired Taste

Monk dialogue has a very specific personality - either it’ll be about finding inner peace and defusing a situation, or taking absolutely no nonsense from their foes.If you want to play a character that’s more in touch with their emotions, this class excels in areas where the fighter lacks.

Playing as a monk is also totally worth it if you happen to be a fan ofAvatar: The Last Airbender, thanks to the unfortunatecabbage vendor you’re able to find in the lower city.

8Druid

Shines In Act One, But Feels Less Important Later

When in humanoid form,Druid-specific dialogue is a little underwhelming after Act One, though the class has a lot of funinteractions in the Emerald Grove, primarily when talking to Kagha. Though the NPCs don’t acknowledge both at the same time, it’s especially fun to play as a tiefling druid.

Drow is also a surprising race that pairs well with being a druid in the first act.The inhabitants of the grove are wary of you, but you can use your status as a druid to convince them to give you a chance.

With that being said, druids don’t have a lot of the reactivity players would expect. One example is thata Circle of Spores druid won’t have anything interesting to say about the Myconoids, even though they should theoretically have some form of kinship.

Despite this, the class is not unrewarding in the slightest.Druids get even easier access toSpeak with Animalsthan rangers, as well as wild shape, which opens up a gigantic number of interactions.

7Rogue

Perfect For Thieves And Swindlers

Rogues are notoriously lacking in late-game combat ability, but they have some of the best roleplay opportunities, particularly if you’re playing as an evil or sly character. You’ll often be able to spot when something suspicious is afoot, and can beat the tiefling children at their own game.

The features of the rogue class are also a massive help when it comes to conversation in general.Expertise allows you to double your proficiency bonus for certain skills, which makes deception and persuasion a breeze.

6Warlock

Call Upon Your Patron’s Power

Warlocks have many different interactions depending on their chosen patron- for example, Fey patrons are particularly keen on you entering theCircus of The Last Days, and those with the Great Old One subclass get some playful dialogue regarding their familiarity with eldritch beings.

Though some of the narration is a little vague, you’ll occasionally get the opportunity to call upon your patron for guidance, which adds some fantastic flavor to the game if you use a bit of imagination.

DespiteWyll arguably being protagonist material, being a warlock alongside him is very fun - you can even chastise him for his pact despite having one yourself. It seems like Mizora is much more hands-on compared to Tav’s patron.

5Paladin

“Your God, My Oath. Let Us See Who Prevails.”

Paladins have an unexpectedly small amount of class-based dialogue options, but it’s a bit hard to notice this whentheir existing lines hit so hard. you’re able to play paladins as lawful peacemakers, or as an absolutely terrifying source of divine judgment.

However, what really makes this class stand out is the Oathbreaker subclass. You can’t choose this from the start, meaning you’ll have an in-game reason for breaking your oath that’ll presumably be in line with your character’s personality.

On top of this, becoming an Oathbreaker is the only way to evermeet the Oathbreaker Knight, who provides some interesting lore about the history of paladins and their oaths.

4Sorcerer

There’s A Reason The Dark Urge Defaults To This Class

The sorcerer is another class that has a tangible personality.Sorcerers are sassy, arrogant, and thrive within chaos. They bounce off of Gale extremely well in this regard, and you can often flaunt your natural magical prowess to those who were forced to study it.

Wild Magic sorcerers are especially amusing,as you’ll get plenty of opportunities to talk about your past misadventures with your wild magic surges.

3Cleric

Feel The Presence Of Even More Deities

With 8 subclasses and over20 deities to choose from, the role-play potential of the cleric class is absolutely overwhelming. If you view your character as a certain alignment, choosing to play as a cleric will allow you to lean further into it, as several cleric-based dialogue options are based on the alignment of your deity.

Selûnite Clerics have the most dialogue out of all the deity devotees, and seem to be the perfect class set-up for a Shadowheart romance. Clerics of Mystra also have some hilarious reactions to hearing about Gale’s history with their goddess.
