A former Rockstar Games developer is claiming that he believes the highly anticipatedGrand Theft Auto 6may be getting delayed soon, based on his past experience working onGTA 4. The original release date forGTA 4was Jul 01, 2025, and the decision to delay the game out of 2007 was made in the summer. The formerGTAdeveloper believesGTA 6could follow a similar pattern.

According toObbe Vermejion X,“decision day” to decide whether to delayGTA 6may be coming up in July. Vermeji also says that fans should pay attention to publisher Take-Two Interactive’s earnings report in August for a better idea of ifGTA 6is going to get delayed or not. Despite some leaks here and there, there has been virtually no confirmed information aboutGTA 6since the game’s initial reveal trailer.

GTA 4 Was Delayed In July, & GTA 6 May Repeat This

GTA 4 Was A Revolutionary Game, And GTA 6’s Scope May Be Even Wider

Vermeji detailed some production woes in his post on X that may point toward whyGTA 6could get delayed in a similar way to howGTA 4was. To make GTA 4 “next-gen,“the team had to compromise and remove a lot of beloved features fromGTA 4that were in the previous game,San Andreas, like removing character stats, multiple cities, underwater swimming, jet packs, and more. There have been some rumors thatGTA 6’s NPCs will feature schedulessimilar to real-life people, which may indicate the game may be Rockstar’s next push forward and be “next-gen,” similar toGTA 4.

Additionally, Vermeji went on to say he believesRockstar should not release another trailer for the game, despite theGTA 6reveal trailer being 500 days oldand counting. His reasoning is that there is more than enough excitement aroundGTA 6and that an element of surprise will actually benefit the game.

Our Take: This Year Is Heavily Influenced By GTA 6

Will We See Developers And Publishers Change Course If GTA 6 Is Delayed?

It was previously speculated thata lot of video game publishers were waiting on the announcement ofGTA 6’s release datebefore deciding todelay their own titles to avoid the competitionfrom the juggernaut that isGTA. Now that there is some speculation thatGTA 6may be delayed into 2026, it brings a lot more questions to the forefront. Will we see a lot of publishers change their release dates? Or commit to a 2025 release? It seems there won’t be an official release date until near the game’s release, so it seems unlikely other publishers will budge, but it’s not impossible.

All of this is, of course, just one person’s opinion, and Vermeji stated in his own post that he has no insider information, so all of this is just speculation. But given how much of an influenceGrand Theft Auto 6has already had on 2025, and the game only has one trailer and not much else, any conversation about the game’s release date or a possible delay is likely going to make the entire industry listen up.
