2023’s hit anime seriesFrieren: Beyond Journey’s Endhas been the subject of much speculation regarding a second season, given how incredibly well the first season was received. With a second season confirmed earlier this year, fans have been dying for more info, and now there’s finally some on the horizon.
Frieren, as it’s often shortened to, follows the story of an elf magician, Frieren, who was once part of a great party of adventurers who took down a nefarious evil. The story isn’t about that, however, but rather how Frieren deals with life after that point, especially as her mortal friends begin to pass away. It’s a fascinating concept for a story, and the execution of both the story and the animation has been incredible so far. The series was praised by fans and critics alike, and skyrocketed up lists of the best anime ever, even managing to surpass beloved hits likeFullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Big Frieren News is Coming at Anime Expo
New Panels Announced for the Convention Include Frieren
Crunchyroll recently announced its slate of panelsfor Anime Expo 2025, which included aFrierenpanel, set for Friday, July 18, 2025, at 12:30 PM. The panel features the Japanese voice of Stark (Chiaki Kobayashi), Producer Yuichiro Fukushi, and Composer Evan Call, who will discuss the series, including “what’s next forFrieren.” This would be the first major opportunity to share details about the second season ever sincethe release window of January 2026 was established back in March. While a trailer may be a bit much to hope for, there could be lots of other interesting info.
The panel information is brief, but it at least confirms that fans can expect to hear a little aboutFrierenseason 2. There hasn’t been so much anticipation for a second season in years, which is a tad ironic given that waiting and the passage of time are major themes of the series. Anime Expo does make for a natural venue to reveal news, though, as it’s one of the largest anime conventions in the US, and it being held in California makes it a little easier for Japanese guests to visit. As anime becomes increasingly global, events like this that are outside of Japan are increasingly important.
Frieren Season 2 Could Be An Instant Classic
Frieren’s Second Season May Decide the Series' Fate
Fans were blown away byFrieren’s first season, and the extent to which its popularity grew is largely unmatched. It’s not often that a newcomer series can challenge an established favorite likeFullmetal Alchemist, but it’s important to remember thatFullmetal Alchemistis finished, andFrierenis not. How season 2 of the series is received could easily change the perception of its quality as a whole, so Madhouse must be careful with their production to ensure that the series has the best possible chance to succeed.
Fortunately, there’s every reason to think thatFrieren: Beyond Journey’s Endhas what it takes to remain at its incredibly high level of quality, and fans will find out soon just how true that is.
