If you’ve ever wanted to recreateGame of Thrones' epic battles, or seen how the War of the Five Kings could have turned out differently, you’ll likely want to follow future news regardingGame of Thrones: War for Westeros.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeroswas announced as part of the opening stream for Summer Game Fest Live. The game will feature both single and multiplayer modes, and allow you to play as a variety of factions, including the Night King and his White Walkers. It also has options for quick skirmish matches or a larger campaign that takes place across all of Westeros.
Game Of Thrones: War For Westeros Is An Asymmetrical Strategy Game Set In The Seven Kingdoms
The Games Factions Will Each Have Unique Abilities Tied To Their Identity
One interesting aspect aboutGame of Thrones: War for Westerosis that the press release from itsdevelopers describes the game’s factions as “deeply asymmetric[al].“The game will also reportedly feature political elements like creating alliances and tricking one another. This means that each house will likely have a distinct identity, and each faction will have different strengths and weaknesses. I imagine the White Walkers, for instance, won’t be very politically savvy, but will have more military strength than some other factions.
There will also be a variety of fantasy units, including giants and dragons. This will also help factions like the Free Folk or the Targaryens stand out against factions without any supernatural support. This could also hint at other potential special powers for factions. It will be interesting to see if, for instance, Melisandre’s magic or Beric Dondarrion’s ability to resurrect are game mechanics.
Our Take: Game Of Thrones: War For Westeros Could Be The A Song Of Ice And Fire Game We’ve All Been Waiting For
Game Of Thrones Games Have Previously Failed To Give Players Much Control Over Or Importance
Game of Throneshasn’t had the best luck with video games. Even the ones that aren’t too bad, like theTelltale Games tie-in, often feel disappointing because they are unwilling to let you make meaningful decisions that will contradict the events of the show. Games also often put you in the role of a minor character that doesn’t exist in the show or novels, asseen inGame of Thrones: Kingsroad. Not only willGame of Thrones: War for Westerosallow you to control major factions and characters, it will let you decide the fate of the Seven Kingdoms.
An asymmetrical strategy game also sounds perfect for the world ofGame of Thrones. By keeping each faction as unique and unbalanced as they were in the source material, it will feel like a much more authenticGame of Thronesexperience. The game will also be taking inspiration from George R. R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Firenovels, meaning we could see characters that were cut from the HBO series. This is the most excited I’ve been about aGame of Thronesvideo game in a while, and I hope it’s finally thegame the franchise deserves.
