Lorelai’s relationships inGilmore Girlsare not always easy to watch, and she certainly does not always make great decisions, but her relationship with Christopher is by far the most frustrating in the series. From his introduction early in the show, it is clear thatthey don’t exactly fit together but are drawn together nonetheless. This is completely understandable; they have a child together, and they have known each other for so long that it can be difficult to separate the feelings of what they had together as teens and who they are as adults.
As long as Chris was in her life, even in the background, Lorelai was never going to be able to move on.
From calling Christopher right before she was supposed to marry Max Medina, to sleeping with him while he was with Sherry,Lorelai and Christopher’s relationship was incredibly messy. The idea that they could one day be together, even with their commitments to other people, always seemed too tempting to the characters when they were together, allowing the will-they-or-won’t-they to go on for years.
ThroughoutGilmore Girls' seasons,Lorelai built Christopher up in her head, in turn, as an ideal guy she could never have and as a villainwho never committed to their daughter. While, in theory, this knowledge that Christopher was bad at commitment should have been a sign that they shouldn’t be together, I do understand why Lorelai needed to finally, and fully, find that out for herself. After years of secretly hoping that they could be a perfect nuclear family, Lorelai jumped into it, but the show took that a step too far.
Their Paris Trip Should Not Have Ended With That
Lorelai and Christopher’s lingering feelings for each other deserved to be resolved for Lorelai, especially because Christopher had put her through quite a lot throughoutGilmore Girls,but their season 7 marriage was too extreme. The final season begins with the pair sleeping together. They then abruptly get married in Paris inGilmore Girlsseason 7, episode 7, “French Twist,“before returning home and sharing the news. Lorelai’s decision to sleep with Chris after breaking up with Luke was already controversial, butthe marriage felt truly out of character.
Both Rory and Lorelai make rash decisions throughoutGilmore Girls,but Lorelai and Christopher’s marriage is one of the most thoughtless and unexpected. This is immediately clear through how little they actually know each other and how quickly their lives begin to clash. Not only does the marriage mean that the pair has to seriously consider Christopher’s unpopular standing in Stars Hollow, but it also reflects howthey did not consider how it would make Rory feel.
Christopher lets Rory down at almost every turn inGilmore Girls, so, unsurprisingly, she is unhappy about her mother’s marriage to him. As a result, the marriage feels like a betrayal of the Lorelai and Rory relationship that is so central to the show. Though they pretty quickly realize that they are wrong for each other and get divorced, Lorelai and Christopher did not need to get married to find that out. Instead,Gilmore Girlscould have just seen them date for a while before breaking up, without the rushed decisions and hurting those around them.
