Last year’s reboot ofGod of Warwas a generation-defining game. It received a massive amount of praise from critics and fans alike, going on to beatRed Dead Redemption2for the title of Game of The Year at the Game Awards, much to the surprise of many around the world. Now, it appears a sequel is in the works, which will likely see a continuation of Kratos and Atreus' story.
The news comes from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who took to a Reddit post about a different PlayStation franchise,Horizon Zero Dawn,receiving a sequel. In the thread, Schreier claims, or at the very least states the obvious, that aGod of Warsequel to the action RPG is on its way.
Of course, a follow up to the game is almost guaranteed.God of Warhas won a ton of awards, most recently theBAFTA for Best Game, and found plenty of commercial success. The game’s ending, without spoiling too much, also perfectly sets up a sequel, meaning that Sony has likely been planning the reboot to be a full series since before it released.
The real question is how long it will be before a sequel actually hits store shelves.God of Warisn’t even a year old yet, so a potential sequel is probably still in the early stages of development, if not pre-production. That means that a release is still years away, and while Sony does have a tendency to reveal games very early, aGod of War 2(of whatever the game is titled) would probably launch with or a bit after Sony’s next-generation console, which someanalysts predict the PS5 will release in 2021-2022.
Still, the idea ofGod of War 2is incredibly exciting. In ourGod of Warreview, the game landed a perfect score and still stands out as a testament to what is possible from both a narrative and gameplay standpoint in triple-a games. While the sequel is still a few years away at least, it’ll be exciting to see where the series goes. There are plenty of possibilities as to where Sony Santa Monica could take the franchise, and it seems pretty likely that Sony will grant them the resources to make a stellar game.
