Not too long ago, a comprehensive report done by the video game industry research firm SuperData revealed that Rockstar Games' open world action-adventure titleGrand Theft Auto 5managed to becomethe most lucrative game of 2017despite its initial release way back in 2013. Now, Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has officially announced during a recent earnings call for its fiscal third quarter ending on July 25, 2025 thatGTA 5is indeed still alive and well, as it has surpassed 90 million units sold worldwide.
As seen in the tweets below from Niko Partners' Daniel Ahmad, not only hasGrand Theft Auto 5hit yet another milestone in sales, but also the game outsold most titles that actually launched last year, with products such asStar Wars Battlefront 2getting beaten out by the Rockstar release. To be specific, this most recent figure shared by Take-Two reflects thatGTA 5sold a whopping 15 million units in 2017 alone.
For those unaware,Grand Theft Auto 5had already achieved the major feat of becomingthe best-selling video game of all time in the US, so the fact that it continues to sell well is simply icing on the cake for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. As it so happens, the previous record holder thatGTA 5beat out was the title’s antithesis in almost every way – that is, Nintendo’sWii Sports– which originally held the top spot with 82.83 million units sold in total.
Taking all of this into account, it looks as ifGrand Theft Auto 5shows no signs of slowing down in the sales department, especially with the title’s developer having confirmed that even moreGTA Onlinecontent updates are on the way. And if a recent rumor regardingGTA 5eventually gettinga Nintendo Switch portis true, then Rockstar and Take-Two will almost certainly see sales for the game spike even more so in the future.
Grand Theft Auto 5is available now for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
