HBO has released the first trailer forTask, a new crime show from Brad Ingelsby, the creator ofMare of Easttown. The series starsMark Ruffaloas an FBI agent on the tail of a group of masked home invaders led by Tom Pelphrey. The series also stars Emilia Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Raúl Castillo, and Allison Oliver.
The first trailer forTasksets up two opposing sides in the series - Ruffalo’s FBI agent and Pelphry’s criminal, who looks to be part of the group of robbers who are menacing unsuspecting neighbors. Caught in their wake are various family members, fellow FBI agents and law enforcement officers, and more. Check out the trailer below:
The First Task Trailer Promises A Gritty Crime Thriller
From the eerie skull masks the home invaders use to the night-drenched scenery in this trailer,Tasklooks like a worthy follow-up toMare of Easttown, but it will still differ in important ways. Whereas the Kate Winslet-led series focused on the brutal murder of a local girl,Taskseems to be expanding the scope of its crime.
The group in the trailer seems to be targeting various victims, which should only increase the sense of dread that will be felt in the series. It will also make the series more of a race-against-time thriller rather than a cat-and-mouse mystery likeMare of Easttown.
Our Take On The Task Trailer
There are a lot of similarities to be found betweenTaskandMare of Easttown- an acclaimed leading star in Ruffalo, the location of Philadelphia, and the overall tone of the series. But it’s clear that Inglesby isn’t interested in just repeating the success of that hit series. There was a very specific flavor toMare of Easttown, which dabbled in dark humor almost as much as it did crime.
Tasklooks to be much more serious in nature, centering on complex family dynamics courtesy of Pelphry’s character and his large family. Either way, though,Tasklooks to be another emotional affair, one that will tug on the heartstrings just as much as it gets the heart racing. The series is set to premiere in the coming weeks, and it could very well end up being a perfect Autumn watch.
