HBO has announced that last year’s critically acclaimedWatchmenseries will be available to stream for free this weekend. Starting on Friday, June 19th, and ending on Sunday, June 21st, viewers will be able to stream the complete series based offAlan Moore’s beloved graphic novelon HBO’s website. The network will also air a full marathon of the series starting on June 19th at 1pm ET/PT.

When announcing that the series will be free to view this weekend, the network stated “HBO is proud to offer all nine episodes for free of this timely, poignant series that explores the legacy of systemic racism in America.” The series will be free to view starting on June 19th, the same date as the unofficial American holiday “Juneteenth” in which, on June 19th 1965, the proclamation of freedom to all enslaved people in the state of Texas was declared.

Watchmenis set 34-years after the events of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' groundbreaking graphic novel and follows Angela Abar (Regina King), as she enacts vigilante justice as “Sister Knight” in order to take down “The Seventh Kavalry,” a white supremacist terrorist group built in the image of Rorschach, one of the original Watchmen. The series is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma and references events such as the 1921 Tulsa massacre, while also reintroducing characters from the original graphic novel. The series also shares no relation to the 2009Zack Snyder-directed adaptation.

HBO’sWatchmenwas lead by showrunner Damon Lindelof and aired in late 2019. The series was seen with much critical success, maintaining a 95% rating on TV and film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, and the first episode, “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice” was the highest viewed debut episode for any premium-cable TV show in 2019. The series also went on to win multiple awards such as “Television Program of the Year” from the American Film Institute. Aside from being free to air this weekend, it is alsocurrently streaming on HBO Max.
