Hollow Knight: Silksonghas been a long time in the making, and as the game’s release approaches, the title’s dedicated Subreddit has decided to hold a contest.Silksong, originally intended as a DLC, was announced in 2019 as a full-fledged game sequel starring a secondary character from the beloved Metroidvania,Hollow Knight.
As the game’s initial 2023 release date came and went, its future was thrown into question. Despite thedelays and lack of communicationfrom the development studio Team Cherry, the fans have remained strong supportersof both the upcoming game and the indie studio behind it.
Over the years, theSilksongReddit page has developed its own culture and lingo, with members falling into factions of “doubter” and “beleiver” [sic]. The Reddit page is now taking their fandom a step further by holding a special contest, posted by the moderatorkurgow, tocrown up to four lucky (or perhaps, unlucky) winners as “Dreamers” to be sacrificed.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Reddit To Select Four “Sacrifices”
Hundreds Of Fans Compete For The Honor Of Banishment
Votes for the contest will be collected on July 2, three days after the start of the contest, and three winners will be selected to be “sacrificed” by the Subreddit. This means that Redditors chosen for the dubious honor of being a Dreamer will bebanned from the Reddit page, then “unsealed”—that is, unbanned—whenHollow Knight: Silksongis released.
A fourth Dreamer named HopOffRedditRn has been pre-selected as the main “Skonger” (akaSilksong-er) to lead the other Dreamers into banishment. This fourth Dreamer will be “the strongest one,“proclaims the contest announcement, since they came up with the idea for this event. Despite the nonsensical nature of the contest (or perhaps because of it), the contest thread already has over 900 comments full ofSilksongfans clamoring to be selected as Dreamers.
The Silksong Community Is Unlike Any Other
Conspiracy Theories And Goofiness Abound
It’s been incredible to watch such a strong and ridiculous communityrise up together to support a tiny teamthat created a game that resonated with millions of people inHollow Knight.Where other game fandoms might fall apart in light of delays and nothing but a few crumbs of news about their beloved upcoming game, theSlksongcommunity seems to thrive in it.
The Redditors are constantly trolling each other with"Silkposts” depicting false news, fake announcements, and doctored social media posts. They’ve analyzed every frame of the scant footage released by Team Cherry, andover-analyzed every cryptic X postmade byHollow Knightco-creator William Pellen. Every day, the nearly 160 thousand members engage in battles of wit and Photoshop, and it’s been an incredibly entertaining experience to watch the chaos unfold.
I’mfirmly in the “beleiver” camp, so I fully expectHollow Knight: Silksongto be released within the next few months. But the joy of having the game finally in my hands will be dampened just a bit by the knowledge that the release ofSilksongwill mean the end of years of shenanigans and an entire online society that’s formed in theSilksongSubreddit. Until then, dream on, Dreamers.
