House of the Dragon’snew casting creates a reunion forThe Hobbitafter 11 years, raising questions about a missing character. A year afterHouse of the Dragonseason 2’s ending, production for the next season is underway, with several new cast additions announced.
House of the Dragonseason 3is currently filming, and the production recently added a new cast member. English actor and comedian Adam Brown, who audiences might recognize as Ori inThe Hobbittrilogy and Cremble inPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He’ll be playing Lord Glendon Footly.
Adam Brown Is The Second The Hobbit Dwarf Actor To Join HOTD After Graham McTavish
Funnily enough, Adam Brown is the second actor fromThe Hobbit’sdwarves to join the cast ofHouse of the Dragon. Actor Graham McTavish played the dwarf Dwalin inThe Hobbittrilogy before appearing inHouse of the Dragonseason 1 as the Kingsguard knight Harrold Westerling.
Glendon Footly is the Lord of Tumbleton, a location in the Reach that will likely be seeing some action inHouse of The Dragonseason 3, making Adam Brown’s character fairly significant as a supporting player. It’s unlikely that he’ll share any screen time with hisHobbitco-star, who’s been absent from the show since season 1’s ending.
Graham McTavish’s Harrold Westerling Has Been Missing Since Season 1
Harrold Westerling was a supporting character inHouse of the Dragonseason 1 with pretty minimal dialogue, although he did have a compelling moment toward the end of the season. When the Greens formed their faction and decided to plant Aegon on the throne, following Viserys’s death, Westerling stormed out in defiance.
Harrold Westerling was the Lord Commander of King Viserys Targaryen’s Kingsguard and was a loyal follower of Rhaenyra and her father’s wishes. Many believed he would appear sometime in season 2, similar to Barristan Selmy with Daenerys Targaryen, but it seems as if he’s been written off the show instead.
Harrold Westerling Likely Won’t Return To HOTD, Even Though It Would Make Sense
Graham McTavish is an excellent character actor who always seemed rather overqualified to be playing a background character, which could be a factor in why he hasn’t returned to the show. There was some speculation in late 2024 that he’d be returning for season 3, but he hasn’t been spotted on set or confirmed by HBO.
Westerling has recently been doing press for his upcoming showSpartacus: House of Ashur,as well as making appearances in support ofOutlander: Blood of my Blood, all while filming forHouse of the Dragonis ongoing. It would be lovely to see him return to the show, but it still seems unlikely.
