House of the Dragonis taking an intriguing approach in its third season, with an experimental episode that’ll be unlike anything we’ve seen from the HBO series. AlthoughHouse of the Dragonseason 2’s endingwas divisive, in large part because it felt like things wrapped up an episode or two too soon, it should mean the prequel hits the ground running when it returns.

Showrunner Ryan Condal hyped upHouse of the Dragonseason 3with words to that effect, promising four major events in terms of scope and scale. In addition,Condal also teased a“conceptual”episode, unlike any other. It’s not yet confirmed what this installment will be about but, coming off some choices that split opinion, it certainly feels like a risk - albeit one I’m quite excited about.

Helaena (Phia Saban) appears in Daemon’s vision in House of the Dragon season 2 Episode 8

House Of The Dragon Season 2 Means Experimentation Could Backfire

Daemon’s Story Was Divisive

Season 2 ending without a battle after so much build-up was one major cause of criticism, but another came withDaemon Targaryen’s visions. Matt Smith’s king (…consort) spent most of the season isolated from the other main characters, trapped in his own personal Harren-hell. Seemingly brought about by the work of Alys Rivers,Daemon was haunted by apparitions from his past and visions of the future, forcing him to realize the error of his ways like the most f**ked-up retelling ofA Christmas Carolimaginable.

While it was great to have some characters and actors return, the Harrenhal scenes became a point of contention. Did they all bring depth to his character, or were they aimless and repetitive, taking away the focus from the story at hand? Were those visions intriguing, or just plain old boring?

Clearly, after the response to season 2’s finale, there’s a need for the show to get on with things, and it still has a lot of ground to cover if season 4 is to be the last one…

It’s possible to see both sides, and that’s why a conceptual episode is such a risk. Clearly, after the response to season 2’s finale, there’s a need for the show to get on with things, and it still has a lot of ground to cover if season 4 is to be the last one as expected.

An episode that plays around with form, perhaps is a major deviation to dive deeper into one specific character, and that could get a little weird, may well be the recipe for a divisive distraction. It’s easy to imagine a lot of pissed-off reactions, or at least just mixed results. But it’s something worth exploring nonetheless.

House Of The Dragon Still Needs Bold Storytelling

A Conceptual Episode Could Be Great For The Show

Of course, much depends on who or what the conceptual episode is about, butI think that it’s happening at all is a positive sign forHouse of the Dragonseason 3. It speaks to a show that isn’t just playing it safe, even despite the criticism faced, and is instead prepared to be bold and be extra creative.

House of the Dragonseason 3 is expected to release on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2026.

Whatever it is, this sounds like it should be a unique installment not only forHouse of the Dragon, but theGame of Thronesfranchise too. That’s an exciting thought and should help keep things fresh, and there are ideas that would be fascinating to explore, such as:

Any of those could qualify as being an experimental episode that’s unlike what the show has done. Crucially, though, they’d be great for developing a specific character, telling a story in a unique way that challenges the audience, or making theDance of the Dragonsall the more powerful.

There’s a lot of potential inHouse of the Dragondeviating from its usual storytelling, and while it may well annoy some viewers, retaining that ambition and being prepared to do something different is to be encouraged. Just maybe don’t have it be an hour about Daemon, and it could be great.
