Chickens, a classic farm animal and a key feature of anyStardew Valleyplaythrough, come in many different colors. In real life, most chickens come in white, brown, and black, but the fantastical world ofStardew Valleyallows players to collect a small range of uniquely colored chickens. Collecting them all requires both random chance and a huge range of difficult tasks, which include earning friendship and finishing every late-game achievement.

All chickens require a coop, so thevery first step for acquiring every type of chicken is to head to Robin’s shopand ask her to build a coop on the farm. This will cost 4,000 gold, 300 wood, and 100 stone, but building a coop is always a good investment in an early-game farm since mayonnaise makes a good source of reliable income. For most rare chickens, an upgraded “Big Coop” is necessary for access to an egg incubator.

How To Unlock White And Brown Chickens

A Classic For A Reason

The easiest chickens to unlock inStardew Valleyare the basic, and classic, white and brown chickens. After Robin has built the very first coop on the farm, all you’ll need to do ishead down to Marnie’s and purchase a chicken. Only white and brown chickens will be available at first, and which color you get is random. The chicken will appear as a chick in your coop andmust be fedand petted every day to stay happy.

If you’re set on one color, you can simply cancel the transaction at the “pick a name” stage and try again

Each classicchicken costs 800g from Marnie’s. If you have a Big Coop, all you’ll need are eggs to hatch more chickens by using the incubator, though you won’t be able to pick the color with this method.

How To Unlock Blue Chickens

Shane’s Special Breed

Blue chickens are a very special variety of chicken that can only be obtained through relationships, though they act functionally the same as standard chickens. The only way to unlock a blue chicken is toearn eight hearts with Shane, which will trigger a special cut scene. By entering Marnie’s Ranch when Shane is there (and only after Shane has visited the farm to let you know he’s going to seek counseling), you’ll be led by Jas to Shane’s coop where he keeps a special breed of blue chickens and his white chicken, Charlie.

From this point forward, you’ll be able tobuy blue chickens from Marnie the same way (and at the same price) as white or brown chickens, as each purchase and egg in the incubator will have a 25% chance of being a blue chicken. Like before, you can simply cancel the transaction as many times as necessary to get the color you want when buying a chicken from Marnie.

How To Unlock Void Chickens

A Random Gift From The Witch

Unlike all other types of chickens inStardew Valley, void chickens can only be obtained through random chance. These special chickens have entirely black feathers and red eyes, as well as slightly thick, angry eyebrows. Thankfully, this goth poultry acts exactly the same as every other type of chicken despite its vaguely ominous arrival and appearance, so you won’t have to worry about keeping your normal chickens safe.

The event that unlocks void chickens has a chance to occur every night, as there’s a one percent chance thatStardew Valley’s Witchwill visit the farm and fly over a randomly selected coop or slime hutch. If the coop is chosen, the Witch will leave a single void egg inside. All that needs to be done next is to place the void egg into the incubator to hatch a void chicken.

Void chickens are much more profitable than normal chickens, since their mayonnaise creates void mayo, which sells for 275g versus normal mayo for 190g at base sell price. With certain farming upgrades, like rancher and artisan, basic mayo can sell for a lot more, butvoid mayo is a great moneymaker for early-game farms. On top of making money, Krobus andSebastian both love void eggs(though it is important to note Krobus loves void mayo and Sebastian hates it).

How To Unlock Golden Chickens

The Perfect Breed Of Chicken

The most difficult chicken to obtain in the game is, without question, the golden chicken. Not only are they beautiful with their bright, shiny feathers, but golden chickens also provide some insane profits through their golden eggs. A single egg, which a golden chicken lays every day, sells for 500g at base quality and up to 1,000g for iridium quality. When placed in a mayonnaise machine, one egg produces three gold-quality mayonnaise, each of which sells for 258g.

Like blue and void chickens, the golden chicken can only be unlocked through a single method, but with a much higher barrier to unlock. The only requirementto get a golden chicken is to reach Perfection inStardew Valley.Achieving Perfection is an extremely long-term task, and could be considered a type of endgame forStardew Valley. It requires completing every monster slaying goal at the Adventurer’s Guild, shipping every type of produce and artisan good, cooking every recipe, maxing out every skill, reaching maximum hearts with every Villager, and more.

Golden Chickens were added toStardew Valleyin update 1.5.

While it does take quite a long time to reach Perfection, it unlocks a few special rewards, which include a ConcernedApe hat, a prismatic shard dispensing statue, and, of course, golden chickens. Once Perfection has been achieved, golden chickens are relatively easy to come across, though expensive. The easiest way to obtain the first egg is tohead to Marnie’s Ranch to purchase one golden egg for 100,000g.

Another route is topurchase the egg from Mr. Qi for 100 Qi gems, though that may not be thebest item to buy from Mr. Qi’s shop. Some other items like the horse flute and Pierre’s stocklist can be exceptionally useful. Finally, golden eggs can be found in treasure chests from fishing or from another random Witch visiting the farm, though the extremely slim chances of these events happening make just buying the first golden egg a much easier method of collecting everyStardew Valleychicken.
