Benny Safdie appears as the main villain inHappy Gilmore 2, and it’s as good a time as ever to go back and watch Benny play another villain in the singular miniseries,The Curse. With so manycelebrity cameos inHappy Gilmore 2, the actors actually playing characters may get lost in all the guest stars.
One of these actors, who you may not initially recognize, is thewriter-actor-director Benny Safdie as the big bad of the film, Frank Manatee. Frank is the owner of a rival golf league who goes up against Happy (Adam Sandler). It’s a funny role, but if you want to see his more sinister side, watch him inThe Curse.
Benny Safdie’s Role In Happy Gilmore 2 Is A Reminder To Watch The Curse
Safdie Plays Dougie Schecter, A TV Producer
The CurseandHappy Gilmore 2don’t really have a whole lot in common, but they do have Benny Safdie playing a fairly loathsome character. In the satirical comedy drama horror,Safdie co-stars alongside Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder as Dougie Schecter, the amoral producer of Asher’s (Fielder) and Whitney’s (Stone) HGTV show.
Dougie pretends that he’s friends with Asher but is using him to fix his own flailing career. For as much as he plays the part of a cool film producer, he has a traumatic past that he refuses to own up to. When the opportunity to publicly humiliate Asher for his TV show presents itself, Dougie jumps right on it.
It’s a very rich and complex part, and for a time, it’s not completely clear what kind of person Dougie is. Ostensibly, he has much more confidence than someone like Asher, who has none, butDougie also has no idea who he is or what he wants, engaging in bitter and self-destructive behavior to the detriment of those around him.
The Curse Could Still Return On Showtime For Season 2
Nathan Fielder Says They Have Ideas About Where The Show Could Go
If you like Benny Safdie from any of his directing credits, or Emma Stone from her acting credits, or Nathan Fielder for any of his varied, weird projects he takes part in, you owe it to yourself to watchThe Curse. Just askChristopher Nolan, who says there is nothing like the series.
It’s a show that follows Asher and Whitney, two privileged millennials obsessed with appearing to be in a loving relationship and to be empathetic, worldly, and socially conscious people. They are not just “not” those people; they are the furthest things from it, andThe Curseexplores this to its fullest extent.
Sadly, the show appears to have ended on a definitive note. However, bothBenny Safdie and Nathan Fielder have hinted that they would be interested in returning to the series. Most recently, in April 2024,Fielder said that they actually hadThe Cursemapped outpast season 1, so maybe we’ll have more Benny Safdie as Dougie after all.
