We’ve talked about it many times. It just hasn’t happened yet. I think we’ve all floated out ideas over the years as to what it would be, but nothing has quite stuck yet. I would like to do it. I think we would all like to do some sort of a follow-up to The Nightman Cometh at some point; it just hasn’t happened yet. But the desire is there.
What This Means For It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
The Episode Remains Incredibly Popular
“The Nightman Cometh” is one of thebest episodes ofIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The premise is thatCharlie (Charlie Day) writes a musicalthat the gang is immediately suspicious of, as they don’t understand why anyone would do such a thing. At the end of the episode, Charlie reveals that it was an elaborate plan to propose to The Waitress (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), who turns him down.
The episode proved to be so popular thatthe musical became a stage show that the entire cast performed, which was included on the season 4 DVD. The episode aired in November 2008 and was theIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiaseason finale.
While fans may hope for Charlie to write another musical, the episode itself is a semi-sequel. In the previous season, Charlie writes the closing number of the musical with Dennis (Howerton) as he huffs spray paint. The duo later performs the song at Paddy’s Pub, only to be booed by the crowd.
Our Take On A Sequel To The Nightman Cometh
It Would Be Hard To Recapture The Same Magic
While it may be disappointing that a sequel to “The Nightman Cometh” has never been written, it’s positive thatthe creators of the series want to verify that it would be a worthwhile episode. The 2008 outing is chaotic, charming, and funny. Charlie’s earnestness about writing a musical and how bizarre it ultimately is makes the episode memorable.
The Nightman Comethhas a 9.7 rating onIMDb.
It’s good to know that the writers still want to make a sequel over 15 years later, but it may be difficult for it to have the same impact. Charlie’s songwriting has come up numerous times in the series, and it’s always a welcome return, but “The Nightman Cometh” was lightning in a bottle. IfIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiadoes do another musical, hopefully it will be worth the wait.
