Jurassic World Rebirthhas crossed a new box office milestone, passing a Will Smith classic to join a sci-fi top 25 box office chart. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the latest film in theJurassic Parkfranchise stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, the leader of a team tasked with recovering valuable dinosaur DNA for a medical breakthrough.
Johansson is joined in theJurassic World Rebirthcastby Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, among others. Hitting theaters in early July, theJurassicfilmgot off to a respectable start at the box office, grossing $92 million domestically.
Per new data fromThe Numbers,Jurassic World Rebirthhas now grossed $308 million domestically, which puts it ahead ofIndependence Day’s $306 million. This new milestone makesRebirththe 25th highest-grossing sci-fi movie domestically of all time, with the Smith film falling to 26th place.
Worldwide,Independence Dayis still winning, however, boasting a strong global total of $817 million compared toRebirth’s $741 million. It’s also worth noting that theIndependence Daybox office figures above have not been adjusted for inflation.
What This Means For Jurassic World Rebirth
Now about a month into its theatrical run,Rebirthmay not climb too much higher on this top 25 chart. In 24th place isStar Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones(2002) at $310 million.Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi(1983) andJumanji: The Next Level(2019) occupy places 23 and 22, respectively, at $316 million.
Rebirthseems likely to passAttack of the Clones, but it’s not yet clear whether it will manage to beat bothReturn of the JediandJumanji. Even if it doesn’t manage to climb too many more positions, the film has still been a notable success.
Jurassic World Rebirth’s production budgetis estimated to be about $180 million. Using the standard Hollywood rule of thumb, the film could be looking at a break-even point of $450 million, a figure it has now far exceeded globally.
Though the film will undoubtedly be profitable,it will fall short of previousJurassic Worldmovies at the box office. 2022’spoorly reviewedJurassic World Dominion, for example, grossed just over $1 billion worldwide, a figure thatRebirthwill not be hitting. This could be a sign of diminishing interest in the franchise.
Our Take On Jurassic World Rebirth’s New Box Office Milestone
Jurassic World Rebirthreviewswere mixed from critics, but the film’s success suggests general audiences are still finding plenty to enjoy with the dinosaur chaos. Even though the latest film may have fallen short of the previousJurassic Worldmovies, its success means there will likely be additional installments in the franchise.
As far as sci-fi movies go,Independence Dayremains a classic, and it’s one of the seminal movies of Smith’s career.Jurassic World Rebirthmay have now surpassed the film domestically, but the seventh installment in this dinosaur franchise probably won’t experience the same cultural longevity.
