Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal are starring in Amazon’s new comedy,Honeymoon with Harry, which has been in development for over 20 years. Costner is an Oscar winner for the 1990 Western epic,Dances with Wolves, and aformer star ofYellowstone. He’s devoted the past several years to his passion project,Horizon: An American Saga, a Western planned as a four-part series.
Gyllenhaal has become a standout for Amazon following his role in the2024Road Houseremake, one of the platform’s biggest successes, with a sequel scheduled to start shooting this fall. He also headlined the Apple TV+ seriesPresumed Innocent, a performance that earned him an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie.
Now, according toThe Hollywood Reporter,Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal are teaming up to star inHoneymoon with Harry, a dramedy that has been in development for over 20 years, which Amazon MGM have landed the rights to. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have signed on to direct from a script written by Dan Fogelman, the same trio behindCrazy, Stupid, Love.
Since the project has been in development since 2004, it was adapted from a then-unpublished novel by Bart Baker. It follows the story ofa man (played by Gyllenhaal) who goes on a honeymoon with his would-be father-in-law (Costner)following the sudden death of his fiancée just two days before their wedding day.
What This Means For Honeymoon With Harry
After more than two decades in development,Honeymoon with Harryis finally moving forward at Amazon MGM. The project is being produced by Mike Karz of Gulfstream Pictures, who originally developed it at New Line Cinema 21 years ago and is known for consistently drawing A-list talent. Over the years,several major filmmakers and actors have been linked to the project.
Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behindCrash(2006), wrote an early draft and nearly directed a version that had Vince Vaughn and Jack Nicholson interested.Jonathan Demme also considered directingwhen the script was rewritten by Jenny Lumet, known forRachel Getting Marriedand co-creatingStar Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Fogelman first joined the project in 2015 to write a new script, with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro eyed for the leads under New Line. By 2017, Nick Cassavetes was attached as director. Through it all, Karz remained committed, and when the rights lapsed, he fought to revive the project while holding onto Fogelman’s version. Now, the film has finally found its footing.
