The sixth and final season ofLucifer, the Netflix adaptation of the DCTV character originated inNeil Gaiman’sThe Sandman, will release next month. With the show coming to a close, it’s time to examine what we know about this final season and speculate a little on what the information we have could mean for the characters fans have come to love.

Despite the fact thatLuciferstarted as a FOX property – airing the first three seasons there, the entirety of the show is now availableto stream on Netflix, which has been the home of the past three seasons of the show. Originally slated to end with season 5, the show received a surprise renewal just as the cast was getting ready to film the final episode – which ended up serving as the season 5 finale, titled “A Chance at a Happy Ending.” Season six, according to showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Mojo, isthe exact ending they’d always planned, just expanded to fit ten episodes, instead of just a series-ending montage. Considering the name of the last two episodes, it sounds like fans are in for an emotional rollercoaster to end the show.

Release Date

Netflix has confirmed the sixth and final season ofLuciferwill release on the streaming giant on September 10th. All 10 episodes of season 6 will be available to stream in its entirety. The names for all ten episodes of season six have also been announced:

The cast

Luciferseason 6 will have the same familiar faces fans have gotten used to, as well as a few new additions. Back to reprise their roles are, of course, Tom Ellis asLuciferhimself, Lauren German as Chloe, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Maze, Rachael Harris as Linda Martin, Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez, D.B Woodside as Amenadiel, Scarlett Estevez as Trixie Espinoza, and yes, Kevin Alejandro as Dan Espinoza. The last name on this list might come as a surprise to fans, as Kevin Alejandro’s Dan was brutally murdered in episode 15 of season 5, “Is This Really How It’s Going to End?!” and was confirmed to be in Hell by Amenadiel. However, it seems that, as expected, Hell isn’t really where Dan belongs, and fans will at least see him find a way to get over his guilt and make it into Heaven after death.VeryThe Good PlaceofLucifer, and very much welcome.

Joining them in season 6 are Inbar Lavi as Eve, yes, that Eve, also Maze’s girlfriend, Scott Porter as Carol Corbett, Dan’s friend who was introduced at the end of season 5, Merrin Dungey as Sonya, a cop who forms a bond with Amenadiel, and Brianna Hildebrand, making her debut as yet another angel – Rory. We know very little about how much these characters will appear or how much importance they’ll have in the final season, but fans have speculated Rory could actually be one ofLucifer’s long-lost siblings - it’s unlikely we’ve met all of them - and that Porter will turn out to be not just Ella’s next love interest, but her perfect match.

What’s it about?

The synopsis for season 6 reads as follows:

This is it, the final season of Lucifer. For real this time. The devil himself has become God… almost. Why is he hesitating? And as the world starts to unravel without a God, what will he do in response? Join us as we say a bittersweet goodbye to Lucifer, Chloe, Amenadiel, Maze, Linda, Ella and Dan. Bring tissues.

Last season sawLuciferfighting with his own demons to fully commit to his relationship with Chloe. It also found him fighting with his siblings for the ultimateprize and responsibility, to become God. But now thatLuciferis God, and now that he’s in a stable relationship with the love of his life – something he’s admitted to himself and to her – where does the story go? And how can the story of the fallen son turned ruler of hell, who became a police consultant, learned to understand humanity, and to love, only to them ascend to the throne of God, end in a satisfying way?Luciferseason 6 is the showrunner’s chance to expand on their already chosen ending, and with Chloe andLuciferout of the police force, abandon the procedural nature the show has depended on for five seasons, as it moves towards closure.

There’s no way to know exactly what that closure looks like, orwhat a “fitting goodbye” would befor these characters, but the fact that season 6 will focus more on the core cast and not on cases already bodes well for the last few episodes. After all, fans still need someclosure on Ella’s romantic future– presumably with Carol Corbett, just as the show needs to show her dealing with her issues regarding that serial killer ex, Pete. They also need to fix Dan’s Hell issue, stat. Plus, there’s also at least one pending serious conversation betweenLuciferand Trixie about his abandonment, some happiness for Maze and Eve, and of course, a lot of Deckerstar. Not a short list, but if there’s anythingLuciferhas, at this point, it’s time to make everyone happy.
