Initially,Mario Kart Tourwas planned to release in the summer. It looks like it will just narrowly miss that window, as the game will come out during the fall, on September 25th. Players with both Android and Apple devices can pre-register for the game now on the Google Play Store and App Store, respectively.

While it will be free to play,Mario Kart Tourwill contain microtransactions. This raised some concerns during its beta phase, as players noticed that the microtransactions are primarily of the gacha sort, or in other words, randomized, similarly to a loot box. Players could spend real money to roll the gacha for a chance at new gliders, carts, and drivers. The game also restricted races behind a stamina system, forcing players to either wait or to spend currency to refresh the stamina to keep playing.

At this time, there’s no way to be sure if the microtransactions will be the same as they were in the beta. Nintendo may have taken the time to revise them based on player experiences. However, Nintendo and DeNA have always been straightforward aboutMario Kart Tourcontaining microtransactions, so players shouldn’t hope for them to disappear outright.

There are some significant differences betweenMario Kart Tourand prior iterations of the long-running game series, however. Maps will be available on a rotating bi-weekly basis, and some maps will be based upon real-world locations. The game will also feature alternative modes to standard racing, challenging players to bring down obstacles like a pile of Goombas or a giant Mega Bowser.

Mario Kart Tourwill release on September 25th for Android and Apple mobile devices.
