Just a few months after the major reveal ofVenom’snew host,Marvel is already introducing another new version of the character, causing some fans to question the publisher’s plans for the “All-New Venom,”both short-term and long-term. However, things like this are bound to happenwhen the Marvel Multiverse gets involved.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel grabbed fans’ attention by revealing that Venomis going to steal Spider-Man’s iconic red-and-blue look.
Now it has beenconfirmed in a report by Popversethatthe Spidey-style version of Venom’s look is not set to be sported by the current canon host of the symbiote, Peter Parker’s former flame, Mary Jane Watson.
Marvel Confirms “Spidey-Venom” Is Not Mary Jane, Setting Off Another Round Of Speculation About The Symbiote’s Host
Battleworld#3, By The Creative Team Of Christos Gage And Marcus To; Available November 2025 From Marvel Comics
Along with the teaser image and concept art for Spidey-Venom, Marvel also revealed that the character would debut inBattleworld#3, so some fans had already begun to speculate that this was not a redesign for Mary Jane’s Venom, who already sports an updated sleek gold-and-black look, but rather anew Multiversal Venom variantentirely.
It is unclear whether Spidey-Venom might be MJ-Venom’s rival for the role of Marvel’s main Venom, or a replacement.
As Popverse noted, Marvel just slyly confirmed this in promotional material forVenom#252, which is the renamed and renumbered continuation of Mary Jane’sAll-New Venomseries,by referring to Spidey-Venom with masculine pronouns. While this opens up speculation about the character’s identity, it also gives someAll-New Venomreaders cause for concern.
First, the retitling of the series, coupled with the synopsis forAll-New Venom#10 promising “Venom vs. Mary Jane Watson,” has somefans questioning whether their pairing will wind up being short-lived.To that extent, it is unclear whether Spidey-Venom might be MJ-Venom’s rival for the role of Marvel’s main Venom, or a replacement.
It seems thatVenom#252 is set to feature three stories, two of them fromAll-New Venom’screative team; details are still scarce, but this does imply that Mary Jane’s arc as Venom may continue. The third story will center on Spidey-Venom, and be penned bya classicSpider-Manwriter/artist duo, but whether it is a passing of the torch remains unclear.
Fans Are Worried That Mary Jane’s Tenure As Marvel’s “All-New Venom” Is Going To Be Brief
Venom#252, Featuring Stories From Al Ewing And Paco Medina, And Tom DeFalco And Ron Frenz
Mary Jane’s reveal as Marvel’s “All-New Venom"was a surprise, andtheir character dynamic has proven to be an exciting new direction for both characters. For MJ, it has been her latest step into a prominent heroic role in the Marvel Universe, while for Venom, it has given him an entirely different kind of character to play off.
That said,whetherAll-New Venomhas been commercially successful enough for Marvel to keep it going remains TBD. There is certainly room for more than onevariant of the character in Marvel lore, but in this case, the introduction of Spidey-Venom seems like an ominous portent for Mary Jane and the symbiote’s fledgling relationship.
Readers will have to wait until the fall to find out more about Spidey-Venom, whenBattleworld#3 andVenom#252 drop within a week of one another. Until then, fans should keep up withAll-New Venomto discover how Mary Jane’s current arc with the symbiote plays out, and whether she will still be in the role in a few months.
