Ever since Square Enix revealed it was sellingMarvel’s Avengersdeveloper Crystal Dynamics (and other studios) toEmbracer Group, the game has felt like it’s in an odd spot, but it seems that everything is marching forward normally, companies changing hands aside. It’s also got a pretty clear picture of the immediate future.

Crystal Dynamics recently put out a Dev update for the month of August, where it detailed what fans can expect from update 2.6 and beyond. And by beyond, it also confirmed who the next DLC character will be, proving severalMarvel’s AvengerDLC rumors correct with the addition of Bucky Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier.

Update 2.6 will add the ‘No Rest for the Wicked’ Warzone in September, which focuses on the game’s villains. The Scientist Supreme is taking bigger risks as they run out of resources, while Monica fishesMODOK out of San Francisco Bay. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds, but Crystal Dynamics also promises there will be some hero balancing changes in Update 2.6, promising more even beyond that. But, of course, alongside these changes come the new heroes.

Sometime after Update 2.6,Marvel’s Avengerswill add the AIM’s Cloning Lab endgame content, which is rated as an Omega Level Threat, that escalates the conflict between AIM and the Avengers. This includes new gear, a new power cap, and more, but it all ties into the addition of Bucky Barnes. It doesn’t specify how or why, but the events of No Rest for the Wicked and the Cloning Lab will see The Winter Soldier join theMarvel’s Avengersroster. His relationship with Captain America is briefly mentioned, calling Steve Rogers his “mentor,” and he is described as a “hybrid brawler and marksman hero.”

It remains to be seen how he plays exactly, but Crystal Dynamics did confirm it would reveal more about him and the Cloning Lab after Update 2.6’s release in September. It’s uncertain ifBucky Barneswill make his appearance before the end of the year, but given the confirmation now and promise of more information after the next update, it stands to reason that players will be able to step into his shoes alongside Captain America and take the battle to AIM relatively soon.

Marvel’s Avengersis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
