My Hero Academiafans are learning more about the creation of the hit series now that it’s over, thanks to an art exhibition in Japan. The exhibition reveals which part of the story Kohei Horikoshi struggled with the most, and the answer may surprise you.

Kohei Horikoshi is, of course, the creator ofMy Hero Academiaand the writer/artist behind the series. His work is highly influenced by Western properties, like comic book superheroes andStar Wars, to name a few of the more obvious ones. The story ofMy Hero Academiais far greater than the sum of its parts, however, and as such has become a majorly influential series all its own. It’s not unusual to celebrate successful manga series with art exhibitions like this, and this one is notable for featuring a large amount of original art, although photography is prohibited at the exhibition.

My Hero Academia’s Hardest Part to Write Was the Todoroki Family

Horikoshi Confessed His Struggle at Showing the Todoroki Family Realistically

Fortunately,X (formerly Twitter) user @aitaikimochiwas able to attend the exhibition and relayed as much information as possible online. As with many of these exhibitions, there were comments from the artist about each piece, some of which were particularly revealing. In the section depicting the tribulations of the Todoroki family, Horikoshi confessed that this was, in fact, the most difficult part of the entire story for him. He says that he knew he wanted the entire family to face off with Dabi at the end, but had a hard time figuring out how to do that.

Thankfully, Shoto, Endeavor, and Dabi’s characters helped to push the story forward, and that gave Horikoshi a chance to figure out how to get everyone in place forthe Todoroki family’s final showdown. While the answer might seem surprising on the surface, it actually makes a lot of sense when one thinks about it. The family situation had to be handled very delicately if Horikoshi was to portray their difficulties properly, and it had a direct and substantial impact on some major characters in the story. It was something that could’ve come crashing down in an instant with one misstep.

My Hero Academia’s Todoroki Family Drama is a Highlight of the Series

The Todoroki Family’s Problems Brought an Element of Realism to the Series

Many fans would agree thatthe Todoroki family’s storyline is one of the most compelling elements of the series. It was a very interesting interpretation of how much one would need to give up to pursue being the #1 hero, and the lengths to which Endeavor was willing to go to attain that rank. Like him or hate him, Endeavor was certainly an interesting element to the story, and his redemption forms a major element of the final arc.

With so many aspects to consider, it’s no wonder that Horikoshi found writing the Todoroki family storyline to be the most difficult part. Given how that part ofMy Hero Academiaturned out, however, it certainly seems like it paid off.
