Out of allthe anime projects Netflix has announcedrecently, one of the more recognizable names in the list was a spin-off ofPacific Rim. The show, set in a post-apocalyptic Australia, is set to premiere as aNetflixexclusive and the streaming service has just released a new trailer, along with official word of when the show will finally be available.
The originalPacificRimwas a 2013 film directed by Guillermo Del Toro in which larger than life robots fought against hugemonsters called Kaiju. Within the story of the film, an interdimensional vortex opens up at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and the Kaiju come bursting out, destroying cities and laying waste to everything in their path.

In response, humanity builds Jaegers: giant robots piloted by humans in order to even the playing field with the fearsome beasts. Piloting these mechs is incredibly difficult and stressful, however, so each one is typically piloted by several humans who are mentally linked using a process called “Drifting.”
There was also a sequel to the original film titledPacific Rim: Uprising, which received some less than favorable reviews compared to the first. The new animated series titledPacific Rim: The Blackis set in Australia, sometime after theKaiju have emergedand devastated the continent, forcing a full evacuation.
According to the synopsis, the show will feature a pair of siblings who are forced to take a Jaeger in order to traverse the continent in search of their parents. The trailer doesn’t give much away beyond that, but it’s a nice little sample of the visual style that the show will be going for and it teases some interesting Kaiju and Jaeger designs which will no doubt get fans excited.
The show’s release date was also provided, announcing at the end of the minute-long trailer thatPacific Rim: The Blackhits Netflix on March 4th of 2021. So audiences won’t have to wait too long for morePacific Rim, not to mentionthe streaming servicehas already greenlit a second season of the show for when the first is over and done with.
