Netflix and Universal Studio Group’s Universal Content Productions are developing an anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popularScott Pilgrimgraphic novel series. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.
O’Malleywill write and serve as an executive producer alongside BenDavid Grabinski, best known for spearheading the newAre You Afraid of the Dark?series. O’Malley and Grabinski will also serve as the series’ showrunners.

Science SARU willanimate the upcoming anime, with CEO serving Eunyoung Choi as producer, and Abel Góngora directing the series. The Tokyo-based Studio wasestablished by Choi and Masaaki Yuasain 2013, and is best known forDevilman Crybaby,Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!. The studio most recently contributed theAkakiriandT0-B1short films to Disney’sStar Wars: Visionsseries.
O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels ran from 2004-2010. Thenovels were publishedby Oni Press, and later republished by Fourth Estate. O’Malley won a Harvey Award for his work on the series in 2007, followed by an Eisner Award in the “Best Humor Publication” category in 2010.
A film adaptation,Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, directed by Edgar Wright was released in 2010. The film stars Michael Cera as the titular Scott Pilgrim, as well as Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, and more.
Wrighthinted at a possible anime projectin 2020, stating that there were “some plans to revisit the material in an animation way”. An animated short titled. Scott Pilgrim vs. The animation was released in 2010 on Adult Swim. The animation adapts the first chapter of Book 2, serving as a tie-in to the live-action film.
O’Malleyworked on an original coverfor the March 2008 issue of Viz’s Shojo Beat magazine. Aside from the artwork, the issue featured an interview with O’Malley, an art tutorial, and a short four-panel comic.
