The Game Awards 2020 is kicking off tonight and while the focus will be on awarding and celebrating the games released this year, most of the attention is likely focused on new game announcements. Host Geoff Keighley has already confirmed that there will be around12 to 15 game revealsat the event and Microsoft will be in attendance in some fashion. Now it’s been confirmed that Nintendo will announce the next DLC fighter forSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatetoo.
It hasn’t been that long sinceMinecraft’s Stevewas revealed and released for Nintendo’s crossover fighting game, but fans have been hungry for a new character over the last couple of months regardless. Fans were unsure if Nintendo would make such an announcement at The Game Awards, though, considering that it skipped it last year and instead revealed Byleth fromFire Emblem: Three Housesin January instead.

While it’s almost impossible to predict who the new character could be, there are a couple of popular theories that are floating around at the moment. Firstly, considering the last time Nintendo revealed a newSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatecharacter at The Game Awards, it was Joker fromPersona 5, it’s expected that, whoever it is, will be another major reveal on the same level, like a heavily requested character.
For example,Geno fromSuper Mario RPGhas been a popular fan choice since even the days ofSuper Smash Bros. Brawlon the Wii. The most recent in-game tournament, which is all centered around mushrooms, has some believing that it has some connection to Geno himself, but there have been rumors and theories like this in the past, so it’s hardly conclusive proof.
Another possibility is that it’s a character fromFortnite, such as Jonesy. Not only hasEpic Games hinted at a potential crossoverin the past,Fortnite’s inclusion of Kratos fromGod of Warand possible inclusion of Master Chief fromHalohas led to another theory that Samus fromMetroidwill be added to the battle-royale too. If so, a mutual collaboration between Nintendo and Epic Games makes sense.
As always, though, these are just theories. Before Steve was announced, the most popular theories leading up to his reveal were that the new fighter would be Crash Bandicoot or Sora fromKingdom Hearts, both of which obviously never came to be.
As exciting as this all is, it’s unlikely to mitigate much of the backlash Nintendo has been receiving from the competitiveSmash Bros.community, after the company shut down a tournament for usingan unofficial copy ofSuper Smash Bros. Melee.
