Although the hype surrounding retro consoles like the Sega Genesis Mini and the Super NES Classic Edition is at an all-time high, there is one demand fromNintendothat goes unfulfilled: the GameCube Classic. Instead of waiting for the fabled day thatNintendoannounces the retro console, one YouTuber known as MadMorda took it upon herself to create one.
“It’s a fully functional console built to scale with the original GameCube,” MadMorda notes. She also expands upon it not being an emulator or a GameCube motherboard, but a motherboard for a Nintendo Wii that she trimmed down. Other changes include functional headphone jacks that work via the controller ports and a converter and two USB slots that exist where the memory card slots were, but it also has a function power button and light akin to the original GameCube.
For this project, MadMorda reveals her goals were to keep it looking as stock as possible and to give it tiny ports with adapters for controllers. It’s clear that she was able to meet both of these goals, as evidenced by the video below. It’s possible that anofficial Nintendo GameCube Classic is in developmentfollowing a trademark some time ago, but we wouldn’t hold our breath.
If one is in development, hopefully, it’ll be as classical yet as innovative as MadMorda’s take on the retro console. MadMorda’s final revelation was that she intends to make a few mini-Game Boys in all three of its original colors to join her rendition of the GameCube Classic. It’s worth mentioning that Nintendo has apotential trademark on a Game Boy Classic, but whether either classic gaming device ever gets made is entirely up to Nintendo.
This demand for a classic, retro GameCube hasn’t stopped the Big N from looking toward the future, however. For E3 2019, Nintendo is confirmed to be showing offSplatoon 2, Super Mario Maker 2, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, but presumably, other titles likePokemon Sword and Shieldwill get some spotlight during theE3 2019 Nintendo Direct.
