Any aspiring magic user inOblivion Remasteredwill likely want to seek out and join the game’s Mages Guild. The Mages Guild can help train you in the game’s different types of magic, learn new spells, and enchant your items. There are also some interesting quests to follow involving the guild that you won’t want to miss out on. I joined the Mages Guild in my playthrough despite being a Knight simply because some of the introductory quests are fun and full of intrigue.
Joining the Mages Guild is initially easier than something likethe Thieves Guild, butyou will need to jump through some hoops before you can really start taking advantage of your membership. Luckily,Oblivion Remasteredmakes accomplishing all the necessary tasks feel fun and takes away some elements that could have made them a bit tedious. To get started, you’ll need to find one of the Mage Guilds' many locations across Cyrodiil, but luckily they are pretty easy to spot.
Where To Find The Mages Guild
There Are Local Locations For The Mages Guild In Most Major Cities
The Mages Guild isn’t just in one location; instead, there is a guild house in every major cityin theStandard Edition ofOblivion Remasteredexcept for Kvatch. Although the Mages Guild is present in the Imperial City in the form of the Arcane University, this isn’t where you’ll want to start your quest to join the guild. Instead, you’ll have to go to one of the local chapters and speak to a ranking member about joining the guild.
Mages Guild houses are pretty easy to find inOblivion Remastered. Each one has a sign out front, and at least one window with an eye logo made of stained-glass. The Mages Guild is also typically found near the Fighters Guild, which flies red flags on the outside of its building. So, even if you’re having trouble spotting the Mages Guild, you can look forthe Fighters Guildinstead, and you’ll likely be right next door. Once you’ve found the building, you will just need to head inside and speak to a member to start the joining process.
How To Join The Mages Guild
Speak To Local Guild Leaders To Join And Get Assignments
To join the Mages Guild, you’ll need to speak to the leader of whatever chapter you happen to visit. Often, they will be wearing long blue robes, but this isn’t always the case. You can see a list of each Mages Guild leader below and which city you’ll find them in:
Skingrad
Adrienne Berene
To join the Mages Guild, all you really have to do is ask, and they’ll let you in, so long as you don’t currently have a bounty against you. If you do, you’ll simply need to pay it off then come back. However, although you’ve technically joined the guild after this conversation, you aren’t really a full-fledged member yet, and you won’t have access to the Arcane University. to gain full membership, you’ll need a recommendation from each of the leaders listed above.
Each local leader will give you a unique quest to fulfill, and you’ll also learn some handy spells along the way. Don’t worry about knowing any specific spells or even being good at magic for these quests. I did them all with a low-intelligence Knight build and hadn’t leveled up magic at all before starting, and I was able to get through them without issue. That said, these aren’t just boring fetch quests, and they often give hints at larger plot developments that you might delve into further as you advance through the Mages Guild.
BecauseOblivion Remasteredallows you to fast travel to any major city without having been to them before, you will be able to quickly visit each chapter of the Mages Guild and complete the recommendation quests. If you’re having trouble picking out which NPC is meant to give you your recommendation, just talk to any mage inside the guild and select the “recommendation” dialogue option, and they’ll tell you who to talk to. Falcar in Cheydinhal spends a lot of time locked in his room, so I recommend arriving around 10 or 11 in the morning to catch him.
Once you’ve finished each recommendation quest, your quest to join the Mages Guild will be updated, instructing you to head to the Arcane University in the Imperial City. Once there, you will receive new robes, and access to some of the rooms and amenities of the University. I do recommend being careful about what portals you step into, however, as you may stumble into a restricted area and find yourself in serious trouble. Now that you’re a full-fledged member ofOblivion Remastered’s Mages Guild, you’ll have access to new resources to help build your magical skills.
