While a notably tame episode,One Pieceepisode #1131 was nonetheless great to watch, and it left plenty to be excited about for episode #1132 and beyond. The anime’s take on Kuma’s backstory continues to be great in almost every regard, and it’s only going to get more wonderfully tragic from here on out.
One Pieceepisode #1131 picked up eight years after the God Valley incident and Kuma and Ginny retreating to the Sorbet Kingdom. Kuma had taken to using his Paw-Paw Fruit to heal the poor and elderly after the king had abandoned them, and while he was content with that life,Kuma and Ginny both found their lives quickly taking a turn after they were forced to deal with the problems plaguing their home, head-on. It was an episode that perfectly set the stage for episode #1132 and beyond, and overall, there was plenty to like from start to finish.

One Piece Episodes 1130 Review: A Perfect Execution Of An Emotional Story
One Piece Episode 1130 In Review
One Pieceis only just getting into Kuma’s backstory, and it continues to be great. Not only was the God Valley Incident made out to be an amazing spectacle, even with how little was shown, but Kuma’s tragedy continues to be great, both because of how far the story is going and for how cathartic it was for him to finally get a brief reprieve through regaining his freedom and becoming friends with Ginny. One Pieceepisode #1130 was another great episode, both visually and narratively, and it’s a perfect sign of how great this arc is set to be.
Everything great about episode #1130, of course, comes from the episode’s director, Eri Hyun. While Hyun doesn’t have much experience withOne Pieceand anime, as a whole, their previous episodes, especially episode #1116, were great for the creative ways the most emotional moments were conveyed, and sure enough,One Pieceepisode #1130’s creative direction did a perfect job of highlighting the emotional beats of the episode. There was plenty to love aboutOne Pieceepisode #1130, and while episode #1131 wasn’t better, it was no less fun to watch.
What Happened In One Piece Episode 1131?
Produced By Toei Animation; Directed By Katsumi Tokoro
One Pieceepisode #1131, “A Fleeting Moment of Happiness - Kumachi and Ginny”, picked up eight years after the God Valley incident and Kuma and Ginny retreating to the Sorbet Kingdom. With the king of Sorbet refusing to provide for the elderly if they had no money, Kuma took it upon himself to use his Paw-Paw Fruit to relieve the elderly of their pain once a week, making him a hero in the impoverished southern part of Sorbet. Unbeknownst to them,Kuma could only heal people’s pain by taking it in himself, something he was happy to do, despite Ginny’s objections.
As the years went on, Ginny wanted to marry Kuma, and while Kuma felt the same, he didn’t want Ginny to suffer by being involved with a Buccaneer the way his family did, so he tried to maintain the routine they had fallen into over the years. Everything changed 22 years before the present, however, asKing Bekori decided to force the poorest of the Sorbet Kingdom into slavery to decrease the kingdom’s Heavenly Tribute, and Kuma and Ginny were arrested for protesting and trying to save their friends.
As Kuma and Ginny sat in jail, Kuma realized that they couldn’t remain passive any longer and needed to fight to truly prevent people from suffering. Coincidentally, at that moment, the Freedom Fighters, the precursor to the Revolutionary Army, attacked Sorbet and deposed King Bekori, and seeing that Ivankov was with them, Kuma and Ginny joined the Freedom Fighters and quickly became two of their leading officers. Things stayed like that for eight years, but Kuma’s life took a turn for the worse whenGinny was suddenly kidnapped and made into a slave once more.
One Piece Makes Zoro’s Biggest Moment Even Greater In Hindsight
One Piece’s Best Moment Just Got Even Better
Amidst all the big events of episode #1131, one major takeaway is that it makesZoro’s biggest moment inOne Piecelook even better in hindsight. Episode #1131 explains that when Kuma removes someone’s pain with the Paw-Paw Fruit, it has to be absorbed by someone, or else it will go back to the original person. That means that when Kuma extracted Luffy’s pain on Thriller Bark,Zoro had no choice but to take on Luffy’s pain, or else it would have just gone back to Luffy, and that makes Zoro’s commitment to Luffy all the more impressive to see.
Naturally, episode #1131 also truly illustrates how powerful Kuma is. When Zoro took on Luffy’s pain, he could barely stand and still felt affected by it up through the Sabaody arc, but Kuma had been taking on pain of a similar magnitude every week for over a decade, yet he was always fine after a bit of rest. One Pieceepisode #1131 shows off Kuma’s true power by having him easily surpass one of Zoro’s biggest feats, and overall, that was plenty great to see.
One Piece Delivers Another Great, But Uneven, Episode
Why One Piece Episode 1131 Was A Mixed Bag
As it stands,One Pieceepisode #1131 is probably the weakest episode ofKuma’s flashback arcand the weakest episode in a while when it comes to visuals. While it didn’t look bad and had plenty of good-looking scenes, most notably when Kuma took on the pain of the elderly, those scenes were far and in between, and overall,One Pieceepisode #1131 is brought down heavily by its largely lackluster visuals. That sort of criticism is unfortunately common for episode director Katsumi Tokoro, but hopefully, things will pick up in the weeks to follow.
Fortunately, episode #1131’s story content more than made up for any visual shortcomings.Kuma’s backstoryhas succeeded for how tragic it’s made his life out to be and how much he keeps trying to do good despite it all, and with everything that happened on Sorbet and the big cliffhanger with Ginny,One Pieceepisode #1131 succeeds for how well it continues the tragedy that is Kuma’s life. It was another beautifully sad episode ofOne Piece, and all signs point to episode #1132 taking that even further.
Be sure to watchOne Pieceepisode #1132 when it releases on Sunday, June 8.
