One Pieceis a staple of modern anime, and it’s all thanks to the Straw Hat Pirates. They’re a group of some of the most individualistic, bombastic, and dangerous characters in the entire series, and together, they might be the strongest crew of pirates around. While they work together extremely well, they all joined the gang for different reasons. Somehow, their travels have brought each member closer to their goal.

Each member of the pirate gang adds a lot to the crew as a whole, as each plays their own role perfectly. Jinbe is the last member to join that Straw Hats crew.He’s a powerful fish-man who dreams of coexistance between humans and his fellow fish-men.Fish-men and merfolk have faced a lot of discrimination inOne Piece,and Jinbe has made it his goal to rectify that issue.
Jinbe is the helmsman of the Straw Hats, steering their ship with expertise. Before he was a Straw Hat, he was one of the Warlords of the Sea. Jinbe has had a tumultuous past, earning allies and enemies across the world. As one of the Straw Hats, however, he looks to focus on the future and fix relations between his people and humans for good.
11Brook
Brook Wants to Reunite with His Old Friend Laboon
The Straw Hat Pirates are filled with some of the funniest characters in the entire series, and out of all of them, Brook reigns supreme as the funniest. He’s a hilarious skeletonized human who ate the Revive-Revive Fruit, saving his life after he died and granting him access to some wildly powerful abilities.
Brook serves as the musician on the Straw Hats ship, the Thousand Sunny. Luffy wanted a musician more than anything else, and he couldn’t have found a better one than Brook.Brook’s goal inOne Pieceis to reunite with his long-lost friend Laboon, and he’s traveling with the Straw Hats to make that happen.
10Franky
Franky Wants to Build a Ship and Circumnavigate the World in It
Franky is the shipwright of the Straw Hats and the designer of their amazing ship, the Thousand Sunny. He’s one of the smartest characters in the series for his ability to create some of the most complex designs out of almost nothing. He can turn a pile of rumble into an ornate and practical staircase in just a few seconds, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Franky lived most of his life on the water island of Water 7. He learned how to be a shipwright under Tom, the designer of Gol D. Roger’s pirate ship.Franky’s goal is to build a ship and travel across the globe with it.With the Straw Hats, he might make that goal happen sooner rather than later.
9The Thousand Sunny
The Straw Hats Second and Current Ship
The Straw Hats have had two main ships inOne Piece,and each ship is a character in and of itself. Their second and current ship, the Thousand Sunny, is just as much a member of the crew as Zoro, Luffy, or anyone else aboard.Out of all the ships inOne Piece,none are quite as impressive as the Thousand Sunny.
Franky designed this ship to be greater than any ship on the sea, and he might have accomplished his goal. It’s made from rare Adam Wood, the strongest wood in the world. Franky actually gave the Straw Hats this ship before he officially joined the crew, adding every feature that the Straw Hat Pirates could have dreamed of.
8Nico Robin
Robin Wants to Find the Real History of the World
Nico Robin is one of the most complex, tragic characters inOne Piece.She’s alsounintentionally hilarious, as her obliviousness to her surroundings is almost always funny. Nico Robin has joined and rejoined the Straw Hat Pirates, first adding herself to the crew after the Alabasta Arc.
Her goal in life is to uncover the real history of the world through the mysterious Poneglyphs.She’s one of the two people around who can read what they say, and she’s desperate to find the truth behind the Void Century that happened nearly 1,000 years before the main events of the series.
7Nefertari Vivi
Vivi Is the Only Member of the Straw Hats Who Isn’t Traveling with Them
Nefertari Vivi is the only member of the Straw Hat Pirates not currently traveling with the crew. She’s an incredibly responsible character who wanted to travel with Luffy and the gang, but she realized that her country needed her,choosing to stay home and fulfill her role as a princess.
Vivi is a vivacious, optimistic, and determined character who fits in perfectly with her fellow Mugiwara. If she wasn’t duty-bound to stay in Alabasta, she would be one of the greatest additions to the Straw Hat crew.
6Tony Tony Chopper
Chopper Wants to Be Able to Cure Any Disease
Tony Tony Chopper isn’t just one of the cutest characters inOne Piece,he’s one ofthe most adorable characters in anime. He plays a vital role on the Thousand Sunny as the official doctor of the Straw Hats, andhis goal in joining the pirate crew is to learn how to cure any disease in the world.
Chopper ate the Human-Human Fruit when he was just a reindeer. He’s gained the ability to talk, plus the ability to transform into a variety of different forms. Some of his forms are viciously powerful and have given Chopper the ability to stand toe-to-hoof against some ofthe strongest villains inOne Piece.
5Nami
Nami Wants to Make a Map of the Entire World
Nami is a tough cookie and not one to be messed with. She’s one of the first characters to join the Straw Hat Crew, but it was later revealed that she was only around so that she could rob the Straw Hats as a member of the Arlong Pirates. After Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp helped her take down the Arlong Pirates, she officially joined as the fifth member of the crew.
Nami serves as the navigator of the Straw Hats and her ability to navigate the seas is unparalleled.Her goal is to create the first map of the entire world, and she’s one of the few characters inOne Piecewho actually has a chance.
4Sanji
Sanji Wants to Find the All Blue
Sanji is the chef of the Straw Hat Pirates and the third member to join Luffy in his adventures. Luffy first finds Sanji when he visits the Baratie, a floating restaurant in the middle of the ocean. After a little bit of coaxing, Sanji joins the crew and quickly becomes one of the strongest members of it.
Sanji’s goal inOne Pieceis to find the mythical All Blue, an ocean said to combine the East, West, North, and South Blues in one area. The All Blue is said to have fish from all four seas, giving Sanji a rare chance to make food from all over the world.
3Usopp
Usopp Wants to Become a Brave Warrior of the Sea
Usopp is the sniper in the Straw Hat crew and one of the most proficient characters inOne Piecewith ranged weapons. He’s able to snipe enemies from absurd distances with his trademark slingshot, making gun-using marines look useless in the process.
Usopp joined the Straw Hats right after they acquired the Going Merry. His goal within the crew is to become a brave warrior of the sea, living up to all the fake stories he told Kaya back in Syrup Village. Usopp has grown a lot over the course of the series, and if he doesn’t consider himself brave yet, his crew certainly does.
