Ever sincePokemon: Detective Pikachu’s first trailer landed, the unique appearance of its CG Pokemon has left fans eager to see how the movie would handle the many iconic Pokemon of the long-running game series. With just over a month left to go until the film’s release, one of the more fearsome monsters the film has to offer has been revealed.

Gyarados, the massive water/flying Atrocious Pokemon only makes a brief appearance in the latestDetective Pikachuteaser, but it’s a memorable one nonetheless. The giant Pokemon is a towering threat as it looms over Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) and Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), potentially posing a significant danger to the two. Despite having a dual type advantage over it, Detective Pikachu himself doesn’t look too thrilled about seeing Gyarados, especially as it appears to glow gold, perhaps indicating that it’s charging up a Hyper Beam to attack. Although the exact reason for Gyarados' appearance isn’t fully known, it looks as though the scene may be taking place in Pokemon battle arena that has shown up in priorDetective Pikachutrailers.

Gyarados is the latest major Pokemon foe that Pikachu and Tim will encounter in the film, as prior trailers have shown dire situations with Charizard and Mewtwo. Prior trailers reveal that the Legendary Pokemon wreaks havoc during a Pokemon parade, obliterating a Pikachu balloon.Mewtwo may appear inDetective Pikachu 2, as prior rumors indicate that the Legendary Pokemon’s presence may be setting the stage for theDetective Pikachusequel.

Detective Pikachuis the first live action and CG take on the Pokemon universe, but it’s allegedly far from the last. Legendary Entertainment producer Ali Mendes has previously noted thatDetective Pikachucould potentially open the door for aPokemoncinematic universe, akin to what Marvel has done with its film franchises. The studio clearly has faith in the project, as writer Oren Uziel is already working on penning the script for the sequel, despite the first film not reaching theaters yet.
