Summary
Some attentive fans have put forth a theory regarding the setting of the upcoming gamePokemon Legends: Z-A, suggesting it will take place in the future instead of the past.Pokemon Legends: Z-Awas first revealed at the Pokemon Day event this past February, and it is set to revisit the formula ofPokemon Legends: Arceus. Back in 2022,Legends: Arceuswas seen as a fresh and innovative take on the classic Pokemon-catching gameplay, and while little has been shown aboutLegends: Z-A, fans have already started theorizing about its plot points and where it will be set.
UnlikeLegends: Arceus, which was set in a past version of the Sinnoh region,Legends: Z-Awill be going back to the Kalos region, which was first introduced in thePokemon XandY3DS games. This can be seen with the variety of Pokemon from those two games, as well as it specifically being set in a version of Lumiose City, a major capital of Kalos, being under urban redevelopment. While the previousLegendsgame was set in the past, there’s a theory floating around thatLegends: Z-Awill be taking place in the future.
This theory was shared by Twitter user Mordecais_mons, based on a number of factors that connectPokemon Omega RubyandAlpha Sapphire(ORAS),XandY,ScarletandViolet, andLegends: Z-A. Specifically, he makes the connection to how Hoenn’s Mauville City is named “Violet City” in French, which is connected tothe future-focused plot seen inPokemon Violet. On top of that, Mauville City underwent a major redevelopment plan inORAS, where the city’s gym leader and founder, Wattson, modeled the interior city after the design of Kalos' Lumiose City.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A: How it ties together:
Before the events of the game, the original founders of Great Mauville attempted to establish three different ventures using Infinity Energy. These include the New Mauville underground city, Sea Mauville, and Mauville City. Both the New Mauville and Sea Mauville projects were shut down after expanding into a power plant, where wild Pokemon were discovered to be living there. Paris, the inspiration for Lumiose City inPokemon XandY, had a similar series of underground catacombs. With Lumiose City being redeveloped and the name connection of Mauville City to keep in mind, it seems fair to sugges it will be set in the future.
Another takeaway from Mordecai_mons' theory is that the setting ofLegends: Z-Acould be exploring the underground, as Pokemon were previously discovered to be living there, just like in New Mauville. As such, the redevelopment of Lumiose City could be due to the Infinity Energy research that was an integral part ofPokemon XandY’s lore. Ultimately, this is an interesting theory that would tie all the sixth generation games together.
