SinceRage 2wasshown off at E3 2018it has attracted significant interest for its offbeat tone and over-the-top combat. Though its 2019 release date is still quite a ways off, plenty more information has been given about the game - including the fact that there will be no mod support at launch.

Rage 2will release on console and PC, though it’s likely that the mod support in question refers exclusively to the PC version. Mods on PS4 and Xbox One aren’t unheard of thanks toBethesda’s efforts withSkyrimandFallout 4, but if id Software is giving limited thought to PC mods, it’s unlikely it will go through to the significantly greater trouble of setting them up on the console versions ofRAGE 2.

Outside of the interview in which mod support forRage 2was discussed, game director Tim Willitis has cleared up a few other important points. Multiplayer will definitelynotbe in the game, for example, though there will be “social components.” He also revealed that the development team were discussing whether the player should be able to drive mech suits, and hinted that cars may be collectible with some kind of garage feature.

Regarding mod support, Willitis said with certainty that it would not be a feature at launch, but was quick not to rule it out entirely. “You know that at id Software we’re big into mods, so we know it’s important, we just haven’t figured out that roadmap yet,” he said.

It would be a shame to never see mod support added toRage 2, since the scale and quality of its open world was shown off in the game’smost recent extended trailer. Games with a large scope usually benefit immensely from modding, since the range of possibilities of what can be added to an experience hinge on the original game’s size and variety.

It’s still a long time until fans can get their hands onRage 2, but unless anything changes, it’ll be even longer still until they are able to mod it.

RAGE 2is scheduled for release in Spring 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
