George R.R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Fire, and theGame of ThronesTV show based on the novel series, are both obsessed with death. The franchise is notorious for brutally killing main characters to defy audience expectations, often leading to over-the-top YouTube reaction videos whenever another character bites the dust. When it comes to gaming, perhaps the franchise most associated with death isDark Souls, and From Software’s games in general, as they almost all use death and dying as a central theme. It’s fitting, then, that it appears George R.R. Martin is teaming withFrom Softwareto make a new RPG of some kind.
This information comes from the YouTube channel Spawn Wave in collaboration with Liam Robertson. The Spawn Wave channel has been proven incorrect in the past, namely when it said thatSega was partnering with Googleon a new gaming console, but Robertson does have some credibility as an industry insider and leaker. That being said, fans should still take this news with a massive grain of salt until something official is announced.
As for how the game will actually play, it will reportedly take place in a medieval open world where players have to infiltrate various kingdoms. The kingdoms are ruled by leaders with special powers, and upon killing those leaders, the player character will gain those powers. Details on what the rumored George R.R. Martin/From Software game will entail beyond that are unavailable at this time.
Some may be surprised that From Software is apparently already well into development on its next game, but we’ve known for quite some time thatFrom Software has two unannounced games on the way. And now thatSekiro: Shadows Die Twicehas shipped, and to near-universal acclaim, it can focus more on the other video games it has in the pipeline.
Whether or not that game is a collaboration withGame of Throneswriter George R.R. Martin remains to be seen. But maybe we’ll learn more at E3 2019 in June.
