The long-awaited trailer forStar Wars Battlefront 2’ssingle player campaignreleased this morning, with just under a month left before the online multiplayer shooter’s launch. The trailer focuses on protagonist Iden Versio, commander of the Inferno Squad within the Imperial Special Forces, but teases certain major characters who will also be featured. Sadly, no gameplay is included in the trailer, but hopefully that means more trailers will be coming soon.
Players will be able to participate in the events following the death of the Emperor inStar Wars: Return of the Jedithrough Iden’s eyes. This is a timespan that’s largely been unexplored inStar Warscanon, asStar Wars: The Force Awakensdoesn’t start for some time afterward.Battlefront 2has the opportunity to create a meaningful and impactful story bridging the two most importantStar Warssagas, but that comes with a lot of pressure, too.
TheBattlefront 2trailer shows how Iden sees the destruction of the second Death Star from the surface of Endor, escaping from Rebel imprisonment, and encounteringLuke Skywalker himself. There are also hints as to the presence of Kylo Ren and Maz Kanata, implying a timeskip could be in order. It’s a good thing Iden is a pilot, because it seems like she has a lot of flying around to do in order to meet so many importantStar Warscharacters.
Skepticism continues to surround theStar Wars Battlefront 2trailer, despite the interest in its premise. For one, it’s worrying that with less than a month to release no gameplay has yet to be shown from the single player campaign. And second, theclosure of Visceral Gamesand the reworking of its in-development single playerStar Warstitle putsBattlefront 2in the spotlight. It’s a month until launch andStar Warsfans are already angry, setting the stage for controversy no matter the game’s quality.
Hopefully the situation turns out to be an opportunity forBattlefront 2. If the multiplayer-focused shooter puts out an outstanding single player campaign, it could shift the community’s attitude and get folk looking forward toEA’s futureStar Warstitles.
