Star Wars: Squadronswasn’t exactly a surprise following leaks and rumors about the title, but it looks interesting nonetheless. While theStar Wars: Squadronsrevealonly gave fans a hint of what to look forward to, EA revealed new gameplay during the EA Play show today, and it looks like a welcome expansion to the typicalStar Warsformula.
The game will follow members of the Galactic Empire — now crumbling after the loss of the Emperor — and the New Republic, both of which players will be able to create. Of course, the Empire is out for revenge, setting the game up for some raw moments. Story aside, players will have the opportunity to pilot a variety ofStar Warsshipsfrom the era.

As fans expect, everything hasStar Wars' signature flair, with flashy blasts and iconic sounds emitting from ships. Fans will have to wait untilStar Wars: Squadronslaunches later this year before drawing any real conclusions, but so far it seems like the best iteration ofStar Wars’space battles out there. Additionally, the game will have a steep skill curve, apparently being deceptively simple at first, but allowing players to develop better strategies as they progress throughSquadrons, making them seem like an ace pilot.
The gameplay reveal puts a heavy emphasis on using the information in the player’s cockpit, giving it a more authentic feel. Plus, the game seems to feature an impressive range of customization for both ships and the player, from simple cosmetics to functional portions of a player’s ship. That should make each squadron feel unique, which will, without a doubt, be a major draw for many players.
Additionally, EA showed off what fans can expect from some of the multiplayer gameplay, which looks something like a push and pull type of team battle. In a way, it’s reminiscent ofBattlefield’sRush game mode, where players destroy or defend objectives before moving onto the next set.
Star Wars: Squadronsis expected to launch this October, but with game delays happening so frequently, it wouldn’t be surprising if it was pushed back further. EvenCyberpunk 2077announced another delay today, so who knows.
